Rather then instructing the rest of us to learn to speak a foreign language so that we can get along better in our own Country, hockeymom should be all over the management at Ross for hiring employees who can't speak a word of English and are unable to assist their English speaking customers.

It's my guess that Hockeymom is a lying sack of hockey pucks.  Highly doubtful her local Ross employs people who can't manage English.  Hell, I live close to the border and our Ross, and many other stores, try to hire bilingual people so as to serve the considerable numbers of Mexicans who cross to shop in Sierra Vista.  By the way, since these fine folks shop and eat here, then depart for home, we welcome them here with open arms.  They are here legally, which I know is a difficult concept for the dummies to grasp.

Any idea where the woman came from?   Some tourists and new comers have never seen a department store before, they are use to small stores that specialise in what ever.

Our American stores are a wonderment to people who come from country's that have no such thing.  Supermarkets in the Veg Isle with bin after bin of fresh veggies and fruits from all over the world takes some getting use to.

We are use to this as Americans, those from other places are overwhelmed by the sight.  When you put this into a Walmart with everything else stocked, it can become a boggle the mind experience.

This woman could not find the bathroom, no surprise , I have gone into new stores and had to ask where they were.
Unfamiliar territory and no idea of the lay out of the store.

At least someone got the woman to a bathroom using highschool Spanish.  Good for them, the very least one can do for another human is to try your darnedest to help them in a time of need.

Freeper I believe you would not just point at the bathroom but escort them to it, I have to believe in the goodness in us all.

Try going to Europe and demanding that they, "Learn some English". Although many of them speak it it is considered the height of arrogance to expect them to. You'd be amazed at the difference in attitude of the natives if you make an effort to learn even a few words and phrases. It's a sign of respect for them and their country.

According to DUmmies, of course, America deserves no respect. We're supposed to spend our lives apologizing just for being American. Screw them.

I remember being in Palermo a few years back. I learned a few phrases that would get me by but some things were beyond my Italian and their English.
Ordering a cappuccino to go was interesting to say the least. But between my limited Italian, the gentleman at the counters limited English and a few hand gestures we were laughing and both got what we needed.

Vesta, You mentioned business.  English is the internationally recognized language of the business world.  My husband works with international grad students who will many times be turned down for great jobs, not all in the US either, due to their poor grasp of English.  Those students do not come to him whining about it.  They come to him to ask what they can do to solve their problem; their problem.

English is also the language of science and technology, airplane control, finance, and just about every other major industry. Knowing English is one of the best ways to get ahead not only in the USA but in the world. The illegals that come here and refuse to learn it are only dooming themselves to a life of poverty.

Tell ya what, HockeyMom--you want other people to speak whatever language they want?  Cool.  Califunny is real big on the multiculturalism, to the point where the LAUSD is mandated to provide a translator for a student for ANY LANGUAGE, as long as there are at least five students in that district who speak the language.

LAUSD has about 700,000 students.  Among the languages spoken are including, but not limited to:

Spanish
Tagalog
Russian
Korean
Japanese
Armenian
Chinese (Cantonese)
Vietnamese
Farsi

And according to LAUSD's own statistics, there are 96 languages spoken by LAUSD students.

Guess who's paying for that?

Speaking of learning new languages....has anyone tried Rosetta Stone? I would love to learn Spanish because I'm seeing more and more job postings mentioning that being bilingual would be a plus. Rosetta Stone is expensive, so I'd like to know if it really works before I buy it.

True, but for the jobs I'm looking at I believe it is more of a sales thing. The last company I worked for had a client from France and it helped greatly that we actually had a Frenchman working for us. He helped us get the contract.

To the people saying "learn some Spanish," would you ever consider moving to a foreign country and simply not bothering to learn the native language?  The woman didn't even know enough English to know how to answer "Where is the bathroom?"  That woman is living and working in the US, and doesn't speak even the most basic level of English, and we should be the ones to make her comfortable?  Forget that.

My brother's friend applied for a job a pizza place in high school, and he wasn't hired because the kitchen staff only spoke Spanish, so all the employees at the front had to be bilingual.  How does that make sense?

I speak Spanish.  It's called self-defense, I had two Peurto Rican, a Cuban, two Mexicans, and a Panamanian for novias at different times.

I'm about as gringo as they come.  I walked into a McDonald's near Alexandria, VA a few years ago and tried to order QPC in English.  The cashier looked at me for a second then inquired to the cashier beside her in Spanish about "What does this gaucho want?".  I told what I wanted in Spanish, which surprised the hell out of her then told her to fetch her manager.  He could speak English but could not explain why he had cashiers that could not.  I walked out without paying.

Vesta, I've seen Ugly-Americans exactly twice. 

Once the "American" was an English speaking German that made an ass out of himself in Mexico.  A native English Speaker could pick him out, a Mexican peon couldn't.  The Mexican guy was surprised when I explained to him that guy was about as American as Lederhosen.   

The second time was as a tourist in Rome.  I was travelling alone and blending in with the locals (trying to speak the language and trying to dress like them) when I got pushed around by a bunch of New Yorkers travelling in a pack.  A shopkeeper waited till they left his shop and laughed at how bad he had gouged the Americans.  I told him I was American and he had a good laugh, he thought I was a Scot.
