I don't thinks she understands the "English only" movement - all it is is saying all government business has to be conducted in English. But her high school Spanish was a big help when she needed to find the ladies' room at a discount store  ::):

It might help you, and others. I went shopping today in Florida just as the Ross store was opening. There were no other customers in the store, only store employees. By the time I got to the back of the store, I had to go to the Ladies Room very badly, but didn't know where it was. I went up to a woman wearing a store ID and asked where the Ladies Room was. Apparently, she did not speak English and pointed in the direction of the Manager at the front door.

Oh, no. I couldn't wait to walk all the way back there. Without even thinkinng I blurtered out in my 50 year old HS Spanish, "Donde esta EL BANO?". She stopped, turn towards me, and said, "Si, Si, SI!", and then took my hand and lead me to the Ladies Room. I waved her a quick "Gracias", and went in.

Only one other time have I had to actually use in an emergency my HS Spanish. As a teenager in NYC, I once had to "translate" to a police officier what a Spanish only speaking woman in distress needed his help for. All this with only 3 years of classroom Spanish?

My point in this? Learning another language in the USA is not a bad thing, as those English Only advocates would want people to believe. What is wrong with native English speakers learning another language, specially SPANISH? I knew when I had to take Foreign Language in HS 50 years ago that Spanish would be the most practical choice. I do not regret it, at all. I used it in NYC 50 years ago, and have used it "today" many other times in Florida.

I do not know what you said Mr. Tanker but that does not sound like a compliment coming from a bilingual man.

Helps as you well know to have more then the mother tongue, learning other languages is no big deal as long as we all can speak the language of the country we live or work in.

America is English speaking and should be so.   Now if one goes into the hospital for a few days and the Nurses are from South of the Border it helps to be able to tell them where your OWIE is.   Usefull way to explain why they have their instructions confused and the enema tube does not go in your nose.  Or vice verse.

My sister in law moved to Miami and working for the state had to learn Cuban a requirement for the job.  She still has her Boston accent speaking to us but there are a few strange pronunciations as she for 35 years spends most of her time speaking another language.   Great her kids are bilingual, and have it over the kids that only speak English, they can work anywhere.

Any idea what it like for a small town hospital ER to have someone in great pain and not be able to speak English, we at work had people that spoke 5 different Asian dialects and English on call, the company would send them to interpret, the company was paid for the time of the worker or workers, some times it took more then one person to figure out what language the patient was speaking.

Unfortunately my Spanish is limited to just a few words, Hola and Civasa por fervour. Just enough to get me thrown in jail in Arizona.

Rather then instructing the rest of us to learn to speak a foreign language so that we can get along better in our own Country, hockeymom should be all over the management at Ross for hiring employees who can't speak a word of English and are unable to assist their English speaking customers.

To the people saying "learn some Spanish," would you ever consider moving to a foreign country and simply not bothering to learn the native language?  The woman didn't even know enough English to know how to answer "Where is the bathroom?"  That woman is living and working in the US, and doesn't speak even the most basic level of English, and we should be the ones to make her comfortable?  Forget that.

My brother's friend applied for a job a pizza place in high school, and he wasn't hired because the kitchen staff only spoke Spanish, so all the employees at the front had to be bilingual.  How does that make sense?

So I take it you do not travel outside our country.    Go visit Montreal Canada and see how far you as a tourist get there speaking only English.  No parlay voes, too bad. Head to Toronto, no speak Asian, too bad.  

Come home and get stuck in NYC, don't understand Ebonics or Jive talk, your problem.

Take a cruise to south America and get separated from the tour, now what, how to get back to the ship when you cannot tell a cab driver where you want to go.  

There is a reason the term Ugly American was coined, tourists that expected the rest of the world to speak English.

Stay out of Florida, if you have no idea of how to speak Cuban or Spanish,  darn at a 7/ 11 you will have to pay $15.00 for a ice tea.

So when do you think we have to close off the gates to America from tourists that do not speak English, do we ignore tourists with big money to spend or find them the same kind of help we Americans expect to get when we travel.

Free born, unless one never leaves their small town to go anywhere then English as the only language is fine until a big company moves into town with workers from around the world.  One must adapt and learn from the new comers until they learn English.  As they learn English, small business must learn enough of their language mixed in with English to sell to them.

This is a new world, it took time for the immigrants in the early 1900 to learn English, no problem the new Americans helped us build America and fight and die for it.

The influx of Jews after WW2 was huge, they on landing here knew no English yet they adapted to become scientists, doctors and helped to build our space age.

Give these no English speaking people time, help them, no need to disparage a tourest or settler here, treat them as you would want to be treated were you to go for any reason to another country where no or little English is spoken.

Vesta I've been to Mexico, three Canadian provinces including Quebec, Hawaii, Okinawa, P.I. and 23 states back here on both coasts. I'm no hick.
Anyone from anywhere that strays from the tourist areas when abroad deserves what they find there, stupid is as stupid does.
I for one DO NOT advocate for we Americans to bend over backwards to accommodate foreigners among us, when in Rome...
So far as the MILLIONS of Mexican and other Latino nationals that have snuck through a hole in the fence in the dark of night like so many animals I actually DO advocate helping them.
I'm all for providing them with a bottle of water, a burrito, a cheap pair of sneakers and a compass that points always south.

But the DUmmie profiled the poor Ross worker.  The fact that she didn't try to speak to her in Swahili, Mandarin, Farsi, and Dutch before trying Spanish proves what a terrible bigot the DUmmie really is.  She just assumed based on skin color.

Any idea where the woman came from?   Some tourists and new comers have never seen a department store before, they are use to small stores that specialise in what ever.

Our American stores are a wonderment to people who come from country's that have no such thing.  Supermarkets in the Veg Isle with bin after bin of fresh veggies and fruits from all over the world takes some getting use to.

We are use to this as Americans, those from other places are overwhelmed by the sight.  When you put this into a Walmart with everything else stocked, it can become a boggle the mind experience.

This woman could not find the bathroom, no surprise , I have gone into new stores and had to ask where they were.
Unfamiliar territory and no idea of the lay out of the store.

At least someone got the woman to a bathroom using highschool Spanish.  Good for them, the very least one can do for another human is to try your darnedest to help them in a time of need.

Freeper I believe you would not just point at the bathroom but escort them to it, I have to believe in the goodness in us all.
