10 Dumbest Members of Congress

A new study finds that Congress speaks at almost a full grade level lower than it did seven years ago. Meet the 10 conservatives dragging down their collective intelligence.

The Sunlight Foundation just released the results of a study measuring the scholastic grade level of speeches made by members of Congress. The scale uses the Flesch-Kincaid test and is based on the length of words and sentences used. Among its findings are, “Congress now speaks at almost a full grade level lower than it did just seven years ago, with the most conservative members of Congress speaking on average at the lowest grade level.” The study further found that it is the “most extreme members” who speak at the lowest grade levels, as well as the most junior.

As you may remember, a major turning point in American politics was the 2010 election that saw a wave of new Tea Party Republicans elected to Congress. Of the 20 lowest scoring members, 17 were Republicans, and 12 of those are in their first term of office. You have to go down to 15th place before you find a Democrat.

There are varying perspectives from which to interpret this study. On the surface it could be viewed as evidence that the intellectual capacity of the Congress is declining, thanks to the new Tea Party members who speak in short bursts of small words. That would be consistent with their shallow grasp of most issues and their tendency to reduce every discussion to a battle between liberty and socialism (drilling everywhere = liberty; clean air = socialism).

<snip>

The ten dumbest members are:

1. Mick Mulvaney, R-SC:
2. Rob Woodall, R-GA:
3. Rand Paul, R-KY:
4. Sean Duffy, R-WI:
5. Tim Griffin, R-AR:
6. Todd Akin, R-MO
7. Vicky Hartzler, R-MO:
8. Tom Graves, R-GA:
9. David Schweikert, R-AZ:
10. Ron Johnson, R-WI:

Clean air = socialism? Wow, you have a lot of nerve calling anyone dumb, after making that statement.

I would have thought that congressman island tipper would have scored the top spot.  :-)

I went to the link and let's just say that the source isn't exactly the most objective site I have ever seen. Basically this study was done by a DUmmy.

Ah, the need for liberals to believe themselves the most intelligent.  I like libs who do that; makes them easy prey.

I've forgotten so maybe the DUmmie can help me. Which of those 10 thought that a higher population would cause an island to tip over and which one wondered if the MARS rover could see the flag that the astronauts left?

Wow, how did I know an ass plunger from the DUmp would list all Republicans. If she/he/it/pat would have put one Democrat, he/she/it/pat would have been banned.

I saw something recently comparing Bela Pelosi's speeches to Boehner's speeches and his were several grade levels above hers.  Worse for the DUmmies though, Obama's speeches were below even Pelosi's.

Shocking!  Coming from the DU, they listed all republicans?

Let's see - Sheila Jackson Lee, Maxine Waters, Hank Johnson, just to name a few of theeeee dumbest congresspeople I've ever heard before.

We all know the dumb things they've said and I'm not in the mood to go find the examples right now.

I remember when this Mulvaney guy thought we'd sent a man to Mars.  Oh wait, that was Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-itz).  Or the time Rand Paul lost count of how many states there were in the US.  Oops, that was Barack Hussein Obama (D-umbass).  Do you recall when Ron Johnson went on about how Osama bin Laden did all of these wonderful things for people in Middle Eastern shitholes?  Dang it, wrong again.  That was Patty Murray (D-amn idiot).  Those are some really bright bulbs.

And using the same study, 8 of the 10 smartest people in congress are also Republican. From the smartest down..

Dan Lungren R-CA
Lucille Roybal-Allard D-CA
Jim Gerlach R-PA
Tom Petri R-WI
Daniel Akaka D-HI
Mac Thornburry R-TX
Olympia Snowe R-ME
Rodney Alexander R-LA
Mark Amodei R-NV
Ralph Hall R-TX

-So- How do you like those results, DU ?

A guy on one of my other sites by the name of NW Pilot is in Patty Murray's district. Every day or so I would find a story about some dumb thing a member of congress did, and offered it to him by posting for consideration as the stupidest member of congress. He enjoyed the challenge but could not agree anyone was dumber.

This is another one of those liberal fantasies like the ratings of the Presidents by a gaggle of liberal shithead professors. They didn't even try to fake objectivism. Every Democrat was ranked above every Republican. The lowest rated Dem was above the highest rated Rep.

Lets see here now...understanding DUmmie math, logic and reasoning like we do.... hmmmm....the DUmmie measure of political stupidity would be inversely proportional to the actual intelligence level, ergo IQ, so.... :yahoo:....my representative is the smartest dude in the house... :yahoo:

Hell, even if he wasn't, he replaced John Spratt....another... :yahoo:

This study actually has no bearing on intelligence at all, but is more a study that differentiates those who speak plainly from those who don't. Also, linguistics are strongly regional, so if one examines this test, one will find that the people tested tend to be in clusters based upon where they live, not their political party.

Mulvaney was an honors scholar at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service, he attended Harvard Business School and he got a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This is the man who the Sunlight Foundation now says uses the diction and syntax of a seventh-grader? The least evolved speaker in Congress?

Quote
Something is flawed here. I’m beginning to think that the Flesch-Kincaid test, which invented the “reads at an nth-grade-level” metric, is a crock.

Rudolf Flesch was an Austrian who immigrated to the United States, advocated phonics in the teaching of English and published “Why Johnny Can’t Read” in 1955. In the 1970s, he and J. Peter Kincaid, a psychologist and Navy scientist, first created their readability test for the military’s use with technical manuals.

The notoriously opaque U.S. Constitution merits a whopping 17.8 grade level, and the Federalist Papers come in at 17.1. Oh well, sorreeee you fancy founding documents of the Republic!

On the other end of the scale, the Gettysburg Address lands at an 11.2 grade level. “I Have a Dream” gets the grade of a freshman: 9.4.

Feeling as though I could now face the test myself, I plugged this column (http://news.yahoo.com/who%E2%80%99s-dumber--congress-or-martin-luther-king-jr---the-dumb-report-on-congressional-dumbness.html) into a Flesch-Kincaid readability index calculator. It came in at grade 11—slightly below Lincoln at Gettysburg but safely above Martin Luther King Jr. and “I Have a Dream.”

I’m better than King. Somehow I’m not convinced.

I know that one of the new states is Massatoosits. At first I thought it was a simple mispronunciation, but then he said it again in another speech, so it must be one of the seven previously unknown states to which Obama is referring.

I wonder where the sentence " Democrats are all a bunch of dumb asses!" would rank on their collegiate scale? Not a lot of big words and nothing fancy about how they are arranged. Does the way I speak make me any less intelligent? Does this sentences structure indicate that I do not have a college education?

How about "the progressive populists' dearth of aptitude is frightening!"

Does this sentence make me any smarter then the first one? I don't see how it could. Speaking plainly and saying what you really mean is always the best avenue of approach.
