A group of Somali pirates captured by the Russian navy in the Gulf of Aden and then set free in a boat are most probably dead after failing to reach the shore, a Russian defence source said Tuesday.

The 10 pirates were captured last week after seizing a Russian oil tanker but were then unexpectedly released, with Russian officials saying there was insufficient legal basis to keep them in detention.

"According to the latest information, the pirates who seized the Moscow University oil tanker failed to reach the shore. Evidently, they have all died," the high-ranking source was quoted as saying by all Russia's official news agencies.

The source said that radio signals from the boat stopped just one hour after it had been set free by the Russian navy. No details were given over the manner in which they could have lost their lives.

Reports have said that after their release the Russian navy put the pirates in a boat some 300 nautical miles offshore, removing all weaponry and navigational equipment from the vessel.

BWAH!!!!

They probably put a bunch rounds through the hull to make it nice and leaky and then took bets on weather they would make it to shore before it sank.

Either that or slipped a timed charge into the boat.

Come to think of it maybe we can hire them to secure our southern border...

I'm no expert on Admiralty Law, but I seem to remember that one of the penalties for such acts is death.......

Took away their guns and nav equipment, and set them adrift under power.......sounds like a "fighting chance" to me.......just because they were too stupid to navigate without GPS, shouldn't give them a break......stupid should hurt.....good riddance.

The Somalis are claiming that they found the bodies and they have bullet holes in them. They are also claiming that the Russians are racist.  :whatever:

Racist or not, attempts at armed piracy on the high seas should be countered with deadly force......every time......and if caught, a rope and a yardarm is appropriate.......also every time.......the Master of a vessel at sea has nearly unlimited juducual power.........until either the piracy stops, or every Somali is extinct......

..I bet thats the last time pirates will attempt to take a Russian vessel for a long time...

As for the Russians being 'Racist' -- no. They are ultra-nationalist.  I bet there are very few wussies in Russia who get all pissed off when the Russians salute their flag, Unlike here....
