Unfortunately Bush is also to blame for this, the State Dept.'s move to foster pro-democracy forces against Mubarak began under his watch and is fully consistent with his regrettably hare-brained belief that all the Moslems in the world were just dying to turn their countries into Western-style democracies, requiring only a force to act as a catalyst to get rid of the old order.  This is pretty much what led us into the almost-unending cluster**** phase in Iraq, until Petraeus eventually stopped trying to democratize them and dealt with them as factions that weren't going to change their stripes.  Since the US has no stomach for sticking around there, I expect everything we gained in turning them into a democracy to be pretty much wiped out in 5-10 years, but at least maybe they'll just stick to killing each other at that point.
