woo me with science (1000+ posts) Sun Dec-11-11 06:26 PMOriginal message The DU privacy rules were changed between December 5 and 7, 2008, Edited on Sun Dec-11-11 06:31 PM by woo me with scienceright after Barack Obama was elected. I would have put this in the previous thread discussing it, but it appears to have been locked. That was when the new language indicating that they can sell our personal information with the website was added. The entire statement is longer and appears more corporate and lawyerly. I don't remember the change. December 5, 2008 Privacy Statement: http://web.archive.org/web/20081127000254/http://www.de... Response to Original message 1. Have you read the privacy rules at DU3? Just wondering if they are any different from the two versions you post here. Printer Friendly | Permalink | Reply | Top

Poll_Blind (1000+ posts) Sun Dec-11-11 07:55 PMResponse to Original message 3. Not only that, it's the combination of the newest DU3 Privacy Policy and those buttons... ...that is bugging me and at least a few other users. You can see the difference under popular Firefox plugins like Ghostery or NoScript.Under DU2, the only script running was Google Analytics.Under DU3, there are a lot more:Facebook Social PluginsGoogle +1Google AdsenseGoogle AnalyticsTwitter ButtonMost people don't run plugins which tell you who's snooping in on your web browsing- they have no idea who's peering into their DU session. In the case of the Facebook plugins, alone, everything is tracked- even people without Facebook accounts are tracked.More discussion about this issue can be found on DU3, here.http://www.democraticunderground.com/12401097From the latest Privacy Policy:These sites control their own privacy practices and are not bound by this Democratic Underground Privacy Policy. Democratic Underground is not responsible for the information or services provided on third party sites provide, nor is it responsible for the privacy practices or content of their sites. When you're cruising DU, you're at the mercy of the least private of any of these snooper scripts. I'm sure EarlG knows his stuff but his responses in the thread don't really give me the idea that they've thought much about this functionality- or its impact- before adding it. Again, Facebook tracks you whether you're a Facebook member or not- you just have to have visited a Facebook page once to get the cookie and from then on you're tracked and all off that information is aggregated, monetized and sold. And that may include not just pages on Facebook, specifically, but pages which run the Facebook scripts, like DU3. Just not looking too attractive to some of us. Kind of strange to pay for the privilege of being datamined- not to mention some of the other concerns people have about their real-life names being tied to their behavior on DU because of things like those Facebook scripts.EarlG talks about a possible way to turn those buttons off in preferences in the future but, yeah, I have no reason to start feeding that info machine any more until then.
