Would it be possible and/or binding if we had a poll among members in good standing to have a vote on whether to keep or boot a troll?

That is part of the problem with juries for trolls. There have been a couple of posters that first seemed like trolls, but weren't really. I think they need to be given enough rope to hang themselves.

The mods/admins can take care of trolls as needed. *knocks wood* we haven't had major infestations of trolls and we're better off than a lot of other boards in that regard.

I'm not particularly fond of trolls either, but I TRY (and sometimes fail) to not let them get under my skin too much.
I try to take them with the proverbial grain of salt. I've been on more message boards than I can count in the past 20 years and I've learned one thing.... They (trolls) are everywhere.

If it gets too bad, you can always ignore! Most of the time, they get tired/bored/embarassed and leave on their own.

Our mods are fantastic!!! Also our regular members are very supportive of each other. I feel like if someone was being offensive, I could write to either, Dixiebelle, Thor , Franksolitch, and say "hey, can you look at this thread,What do you think, do you think this is odd??, is he/she out of line...??" Of course I will defend myself first.

I'm not particularly fond of trolls either, but I TRY (and sometimes fail) to not let them get under my skin too much.

I'm weary of them hijacking every damned thread we start. On my old and now extinct "CG Discussions" forum, I'd boot them immediately.

Just ignore the trolls. Why do you let them get to you? That's exactly what they want. I like to have fun with them. They provide a short amount of entertainment before they decide to leave or get banned. The troll you are speaking of is on his road to ban-land I am sure. :)

Echo chambers are boring as all hell. Just because someone posts dissenting opinions does not make them trolls.
You don't have to place them on ignore, just don't take the bait.
Booting anyone whose opinion you don't like is FR or DU - it is definitely NOT this place.

Agreed wholeheartedly. Even though I don't often post, this is the one board I keep returning to because it's fun, interesting, and never dull.
Mods deserve more pie, travel money, and experiences.

I don't believe in silencing people. No matter what their beliefs are, or how stupid they are. Of course if they break the rules, then I am all for the mods giving the perp a ban, as long as he was properly warned more than once about it.

I really haven't seen a harm done to the forum, or to any individual that would warrant banning. I don't know if Trip got banned, although I did see him break forum rules with multiple warnings, still I didn't see a lot of harm that he did. I wouldn't have favored his banning, just saying.

There is a point where a troll becomes disruptive and you do have to ban them.
The mods have been pretty good about discerning when that point is reached. Sometimes right away, sometimes when we are invaded by trolls from another board, sometimes after members have chewed them up and spit them out.
The presence of pie and kitty posts are a good indicator that a troll is wearing out his welcome.
Bottom line: If a troll upsets you don't let him get you angry. Instead of anger, respond with Humor. If lacking in humor, search Bing or Google for pie and kitty pictures to post.
If you see a particularly witty response to a troll, Hi5 that poster. Reward good behavior.
Life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react to it. Choose to react the way you want, now how the troll wants.

I pretty much mentally ignore someone who's being a troll. If you're going to post on a political board you really need to have thick skin, there's "no crying in politics".

Trolls as in those who post stuff just to get a rise out of us and then play games with us?
Those are the people who are not interested in an honest discussion on something but to sow irritation,unhappiness and division.They are the ones I have come down hard on as a blog moderator to get them to clean up their act or LEAVE!
People who simply have a very divergent view on things and willing to defend them decently are the ones that energize a forum is always a boon.Sure we can blast them for what they write by rational rejoinders but not them personally as a person.
