Title: Wreath
Post by: BEG on January 15, 2013, 09:47:19 PM
I'm making a book wreath. I have spent the past few hours punching out approximately 1,500 scalloped circles.

First i covered a styrofoam wreath form with burlap. I got the burlap "ribbon" 50% off at Hobby Lobby the other day.  I used a 40% off coupon on the wreath form (it was normally a little over $11). I used a hot glue gun to secure it on the back.

Then I took my 2.5" scalloped circle punch (it's a HUGE punch)

And an old book with over 530 something pages

Ripped out all the pages

And got 6 circles out of each page. I could only layer 4 pages at once. It took me hours to punch out.

The pages were really old, even though you can't really see it in the pictures. It was a used book my husband bought when he was in college at ASU. I started punching the circles BEFORE I sent my husband a text (he is away for business) to ask him if he cared.  :shucks:

I'm thinking about running some ink (brownish color) around the edge of the scalloped circles before I put them on the wreath. I wrapped the wreath with burlap because I may be hanging it on my mirror and you will be able to see some of the back reflected in the mirror and also the green of the form wouldn't show through the book paper.

I will update tomorrow to show anyone who would be interested in making one how you do it. Im sure it will take awhile to make.  There are several other types of book wreaths I want to make too.  If I ever get around to making the other book wreaths I want to make I will show you guys those too.

I'm still sick, my face is full of snot and my eyeballs feel like they are going to pop out of my head. My teeth hurt too.

BEG, that looks like it's going to be beautiful!  I'm anxious to see what it looks like when you get done.

I needed to get out of the lounge anyway...Freeper and Big Dog are corrupting me...LOl

I hope you feel better soon.  You might need an antibiotic if it gets much worse or you may need one now.  Have you seen the doctor yet?  Stay hydrated too.  I feel so bad for you, I know what it's like, I had it last year for almost a month.

I haven't seen a doctor yet Teri. I thought I was feeling better yesterday then today my whole face started hurting and I have slowly been getting worse as the day goes on. My daughter stayed home today, although she doesn't sound as bad as I do.

My husband sent me a text and told me that the book is a CLASSIC.  :whistling:  He hasn't responded yet to my WHAT??? text.

I wanted a larger wreath than I found (18"). Try finding a 24" wreath form.

Inking of the outside edges took longer then I thought. A whole Audrey Hepburn movie in fact.

These aren't all of then.

At first I poked them into the foam using a pencil (I'm gluing each one with hot glue). Then the hot glue pulled the lead out of the pencil.

I switched to a pair of craft tweezers (the kind that stay closed until you squeeze them). They wook better then the pencil.  This is going to take me forever.

BEG, I have a Christmas wreath that a friend made me that's made just like that.  I had no idea that's how you were going to make it when you first posted the pics.  Mine is made of cloth instead, but that looks great already.  Those are great gifts.  I hang mine on the wall every Christmas I love it.

Hope you're feeling better today too.

Several old movies, 5 1/2 hot glue sticks and burns from the hot glue later, I'm finished.

I don't know yet. I'm going to wait a few days and come back to it. I ordered a custom burlap table runner from etsy and some burlap "ribbon" that is dyed. I think I'm going to use it to hang it wherever I decide to put it but its too small for my round mirror over my fireplace which was why I was looking for a larger wreath form.  I wanted to use a wreath form that was at least 24" but I couldn't find one.

I used a Marvy Uchida 2.5" scalloped circle punch to punch out the book paper. It takes awhile so sit back and watch a move while you are punching.

Another thing I learned, you don't need to wrap the whole wreath in burlap. If you want it to look professionally just put burlap on the back.

At first I was thinking of using cloth, but now that I think about it, punching out the pattern would be a lot easier less stressful on the hands than with scissors.  I'd just have to find a good magazine or paper that would work well.  I have tons of mags that I could use too.  Maybe a floral magazine with lots of color, I think I'd like that for a nice Spring wreath for the dinning room wall.

I bought a few chipboard words the other day (live, love & laugh). I decided to do something to the one that says love. I painted it with black chalk board paint then sat and looked at it while I watched yet another old movie (Arsenic and Old Lace with Cary Grant, fun movie).

This is what I ended up doing to it.

Similar conversation in my house the other day...

Me:Hey honey, I found a really neat magazine cookbook today. I'm going to make a cake recipe I found.

Him: Don't you have enough cookbooks? there's 500 of them in your office.

Me: Don't you have enough fishing stuff?

Him: I haven't bought anything new in months! You bought a new cookbook last week!

Me: What about all those worm thingies you bought last week? Something about the fish were biting on purple plastic worms instead of red ones? And just who did the study to determine that fish know the difference between a purple plastic worm and a red one or a green one or whatever?

Him: What kind of cake are ya makin' ?

My wife left me... I don't understand.
After the last child was born, she told me we had to cut back on expenses - I had to give up drinking beer.
I was not a big drinker, maybe a 12-pack on weekends.
Anyway, I gave it up but I noticed the other day when she came home from grocery shopping. The receipt included $45 in makeup.
I said, "Wait a minute I've given up beer and you haven't given up anything!"
She said, "I buy that makeup for you, so I can look pretty for you."
I told her, "Hell, that's what the beer was for!"
I don't think she'll be back

The wreath took me hours to do which I spread out over a few days.  Now I know why they sell them for so much on Etsy. The "LOVE" word I used chalk board paint and then used Mod Podge to adhere a piece of Tim Holtz scrapbook paper that I already had.  I traced the letters then cut it out.  Then I used a couple different sizes of files to file the edges and inked it with distress ink, then a final coat of Mod Podge (matte).

One thing I noticed is a lot of people don't know when to stop and they keep adding crap. There are a lot of people I follow on YouTube who add a whole bunch of flowers and bling on their projects and, in my view, ruin it.

Took the burlap ribbon off, it was too large.

I had this little table laying around, had it for years so I put it under the wreath with some other stuff. I think I need a larger and slightly taller table for that area.  Oddly, there is not a plug there. It really feels like there should have been a plug. I could have put a lamp instead of a candle on the table.
