Love It or Loathe It: Instacart Reveals America’s Most Polarizing Foods: The Most Controversial Foods in America

https://www.instacart.com/company/updates/love-it-or-loathe-it-instacart-reveals-americas-most-polarizing-foods/?utm_placement=newsletter

Quote
Chances are there’s at least one food everyone tries to avoid on the dinner plate, at restaurants, or during family gatherings. But which foods do we collectively loathe at higher rates than others? From pungent seafood to tangy pickled bites, there’s a spectrum of foods that spark passionate debates among our taste buds, and some are more polarizing than others. Let’s take a look!

After researching some of the most divisive foods, we created a list of the top contenders and then commissioned a survey conducted online by The Harris Poll. Within the survey, we asked more than 2,000 Americans which of those foods they hated.

Here’s a breakdown of the most hated (sorry anchovies!) → least hated (you’re not so bad, mayo) polarizing foods:

“While the list of divisive foods is long, let’s focus on the top three hated foods – anchovies, black licorice, and oysters – and what makes each seemingly controversial for American palates. Anchovies possess a briny, fishy flavor profile, oysters give off a super slimy mouthfeel, and licorice shocks the tongue with an unmissable anise and fennel flavor. On top of that, they all present chewy textures that can prove challenging for certain people. The complex interplay of these unique flavors and textures is likely why they’re at the top of the list, and it’s also the reason we’re not seeing foods like white bread show up.” – Laurentia Romaniuk, Instacart’s Trends Expert

Let’s explore the top polarizing foods a bit more deeply…

Hold the Anchovies

Our survey found that half of Americans hate anchovies, making the small, oily fish the most hated polarizing food on our list. Below, we include a breakdown of the states that order the most and fewest anchovies by Instacart share order, in addition to a few other bite-sized insights.

Licorice’s Dark Secret

Following anchovies, 45% of Americans hate black licorice, according to our survey. This may not come as a surprise, but there’s a generational and gender divide when it comes to this candy – more below.

The World is Your Oyster

Are oysters an epicurean pleasure or a pass? Our survey found that 41% of Americans hate this delicacy from the sea, with 51% of women and only 30% of men giving it a hard pass. Curious indeed!

What’s also curious is that three of the five top states that order the most oysters are completely landlocked – Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming – while three of the five states that order the fewest oysters are located in New England – New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine – with much closer access to the ocean and a proclivity for consuming seafood.

Polarizing POV’s: additional findings from our survey found…

The top reasons Americans think a food could be polarizing or controversial include:
Smell – 66%
Strong flavor – 57%
Texture – 57%
Visual appearance – 47%
Type of flavor (e.g., sweet, sour, salty) – 47%
How it makes you feel after eating it – 32%
37% of Americans have food preferences they consider to be polarizing or controversial.
Nearly 7 in 10 Americans (69%) say they have encountered a food that they initially disliked but eventually grew to enjoy.
37% of Americans say they are eager to try new foods that have a polarizing or controversial reputation.
Whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em, we hope this provides some interesting food for thought next time you indulge in these controversial foods.

Survey Method:

This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of Instacart from August 3-7, 2023, among 2,032 adults ages 18 and older. The sampling precision of Harris online polls is measured by using a Bayesian credible interval.  For this study, the sample data is accurate to within +/- 2.7 percentage points using a 95% confidence level. For complete survey methodology, including weighting variables and subgroup sample sizes, please contact press@instacart.com.

Adjusted for Growth:

We adjust Instacart growth percentages by the overall growth of total orders via Instacart. Doing so removes the influence of our platform growth so we can focus on the change in consumer behavior.

FWIW, the foods I absolutely will not touch (from this list):

  • Anchovies
  • Oysters
  • Brussel sprouts (don't even THINK of cooking those little bastards in my kitchen)
  • Okra

I find the antipathy toward black licorice surprising. I'm OK with that stuff, though I haven't eaten it since I was a kid.

New Proof the Biden Presidency Is Actually Obama’s Third Term

https://townhall.com/columnists/spencerbrown/2023/08/31/new-proof-the-biden-presidency-is-just-obamas-third-term-n2627765?bcid=d519b945f8a32ba161895b1c7231c16c5fa3cd48222b27fc1e013476354174f9&recip=29140120

It’s been said that the Biden-Harris administration is little more than a retread of the Obama-Biden years, something of an attempt to restore and reinforce the heavy-handed policies enacted by our 44th president and his blundering VP-turned-commander in chief. Whether Biden is aware of these claims or not, he’s doing little to make his first term in the Oval Office look like anything but a third term for Obama and his legacy of abusing executive power.

More evidence of this arose on Wednesday when the Biden Department of Labor announced that it would begin work to enact a rule that was first tried by none other than Barack Obama.

Dealing with overtime pay eligibility, the Department of Labor announced a proposed rule which would grant overtime pay to “most salaried workers earning less than $1,059 per week, about $55,000 per year.” The proposed rule, according to the Labor Department, would mean 3.6 million American workers would suddenly get time and a half for working more than 40 hours each week.

Back when Biden was VP, the Obama-Biden administration mounted an attempt at implementing such a rule, but one that set the threshold at incomes just above $47,000. Back then, legal challenges were swift. More than 20 states joined a lawsuit led by Nevada’s then-Attorney General Adam Laxalt challenging the rule and arguing that it “would burden private and public sectors by straining budgets and forcing layoffs or cuts in working hours,” as AP reported in September 2016.

By November 2016, just days before the overtime rule was set to take effect, a federal judge blocked it from being implemented. The Labor Department appealed the preliminary injunction to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals where Laxalt and other plaintiffs fighting against the rule sought summary judgment. The judge granted plaintiffs’ motion on claims that the Obama-Biden Labor Department had exceeded its rulemaking authority, and, subsequently, the Labor Department ended its appeal thereby quitting its attempts to implement the rule.

But now, just a few years later, the Biden administration is seeking to revive the policy previously killed off in federal court after it was decided that the Department of Labor doesn’t have the authority to implement such a sweeping policy.

Current Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su said Biden’s zombie rule was based on “extensive outreach to employers, workers, unions and other stakeholders” and more than 25 “listening sessions with more than 2,000 participants,” but the same significant issues still exist with the rule, just as there were when President Obama first tried to use the heavy hand of federal bureaucracy to dictate private employers’ business decisions.

Luke Wake, an attorney at the Pacific Legal Foundation (PLF), noted that, “as Justice Kavanaugh recently observed, the Department of Labor has no authority to dictate these salary level rules. Only Congress has the power to make law and Congress has never authorized FOL to impose minimum salary requirements,” Wake emphasized. “DOL will be hard pressed to defend this new rule.”

As with the first Obama administration’s run at such a rule, the Biden administration already faces legal opposition. PLF has a client, Robert Mayfield, who Wake says “is already challenging DOL’s authority” in the matter, arguing the zombie rule “would violate separation of powers.”

In addition to the dubious constitutionality of the Labor Department’s proposed rule, there’s also the real-world havoc such a policy would bring to an economy that’s already in the doldrums.

According to Job Creators Network President and CEO Alfredo Ortiz, Biden’s new overtime rule "hurts small businesses and workers. It increases payroll costs on small businesses at the worst possible time as they contend with Bidenflation and a credit crunch. And it hurts millions of salaried employees, often middle managers, by preventing them from working the hours needed to get the job done and climb the corporate ladder,” Ortiz explained.

Due to the rule, businesses — especially small businesses — are likely to take action to prevent their employees from triggering the new overtime costs and so “be forced to demote them back to hourly wage earners, reversing their hard-earned career progression,” added Ortiz. “This rule is just the latest front in the Biden administration’s war on small businesses and American workers.”

So, the proposed rule is bad policy which would further harm an economy that Biden’s already sent spiraling. Beyond that, it’s a policy that the Department of Labor (or the executive branch in general) does not have the authority to enact. And lastly, it’s just a stale leftover from the Obama-Biden administration that’s being resurrected after being killed off once before by the courts in some weird attempt to finish the job the Obama administration started.

Despite being an attempt to make Obama’s third term happen, it’s also entirely on-brand for Biden to pursue a policy that’s likely to be struck down by the courts. From the eviction moratorium to the vaccine mandate and student loans to emissions rules, President Biden has not found an unconstitutional overreach he didn’t try to enact.

In a rare potential bright side to all this executive branch overreach, it seems likely that the Supreme Court’s looming review of Chevron deference could drop a veritable nuke on the administrative state and the leeway it has enjoyed.

The legal doctrine has allowed bureaucrats at federal agencies to read between the lines of non-specific laws, or pry the lines even wider than it seems the legislative branch may have intended, to fill in ambiguities in a given statute and then receive deference from the courts based on an agency's interpretation of a law.

But the high court’s consideration of Loper Bright Enterprises vs. Raimondo could mean the ongoing Obama-Biden legacy of using executive power to achieve goals — ones Americans’ elected representatives in Congress would never assent to — finally comes to an end, thanks in no small part to their abuse of such deference.

There is little doubt that SharterJoe doesn't have the smarts to think of all this capitalism-crippling crap on his own. Barry's the marionette and SharterJoe is his puppet.

Some of those foods and herbs I do avoid, e.g. oysters and pickles. But okra, Brussels sprouts, and coarsely chopped cilantro are a hard NO for me. BTW, some people  genetically perceive cilantro as tasting like soap, and I may be one such (one of my munchkins is).

Appeals court revives bribery charge for Apple security exec in Santa Clara County concealed-gun permit scandal

https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/08/25/appeals-court-revives-bribery-charge-for-apple-security-exec-in-santa-clara-county-concealed-gun-permit-scandal/

Quote
SAN JOSE — A state appellate court on Friday reversed a Santa Clara County judge’s 2021 decision to drop a bribery charge against an Apple security executive who was accused of offering a large iPad donation to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office to get concealed-gun licenses for his security agents.

That means for the time being, Thomas Moyer — who runs global security operations for the tech titan — will head back toward trial in the South Bay. The charge he faces were part of a massive scandal involving former Sheriff Laurie Smith that saw her administration accused of leveraging the coveted weapons permits for political donations and other in-kind favors.
...
Geffon sided with the contention by Moyer’s attorneys that no bribery motive existed because the permits eventually issued to four Apple security employees in early 2019 had already been approved by the sheriff’s office by the time he proposed donating 200 iPads to the agency’s training division. In a criminal indictment, former Undersheriff Rick Sung and sheriff’s Capt. James Jensen are accused of holding up those permits to procure what would eventually become the proposed donation.

But Friday’s ruling by the Sixth District Court of Appeal, which came two years after the District Attorney’s Office challenged Geffon’s dismissal of Moyer’s bribery charge, came to the opposite conclusion.

This is a good, common-sense, ruling. My big frustration in this is that, AFAIK, Laurie Smith has not and will not be prosecuted for this scheme. She resigned in the lead-up to the 2022 election, but Big Whoop. Abuse of power like hers deserves time in the GreyBar Hotel.

‘How to Serve White Victims’

Quote
After “antiracist” consultant Karen Fleshman finished a training in Oakland, Calif., she took to Facebook to express pride in her work: “Great afternoon training Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price’s Victim Services team in ‘How to Serve White Victims.’ ...

But when I started asking questions about the June 26 training, suddenly trainer and trainee didn’t want to talk about it. Ms. Fleshman didn’t respond to my queries. Neither did the head of the district attorney’s Victim Services Division, Kristina Molina. Ms. Price’s press officer, Patti Lee, told me that she deals with the press, whereas I, as a think-tank employee, have a “specific point of view.”

The Victim Services Division consists of social workers who help crime victims obtain psychological and financial support. Ms. Fleshman’s PowerPoint slides reinforce the idea of dividing victims by race. (Photos of those slides circulated among Oakland’s law-enforcement community, one of whose members forwarded them to me.)

One PowerPoint panel lists the session’s “Key Takeaways.” Among them: “White people are not entitled to harm you”; “When interacting with white victims, speak up for yourself or for your coworkers”; and “If a white victim continues to harm you, ask that they be transferred.” The slide also asserts that “white victims are entitled to the same compassion and practices as all victims,” but the rest of the slide is at odds with that message. It’s unclear how white crime victims “harm” government employees. Another panel from the training asserts that “White Supremacy Culture” is characterized by “Perfectionism,” “Objectivity,” “Sense of Urgency” and “Individualism.” Perhaps it’s harmful to expect government employees to respond to crimes objectively and urgently.

Price is so awful that there's a recall attempt gathering signatures.

Low-SES Asians are top students: Can 'excellence gap' be closed?

https://www.joannejacobs.com/post/low-ses-asians-are-top-students-can-excellence-gap-be-closed

Quote
Thirteen percent of Asian-American Pacific Islander (AAPI) eighth graders from very low socioeconomic families (mom didn't finish high school) scored "advanced" in math on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), concludes Fordham's new report on "excellence gaps." That's more than any other group except for very high SES (mom completed college) whites, note Meredith Coffey and Adam Tyner. Reading is not quite as dramatic, but AAPI students again are very high achievers at all SES levels.
...
In addition, they write, "leaders should invest in better understanding the remarkable success of even the lowest-SES AAPI students in reaching the highest levels of achievement." What are these students doing than other students could do?

My guess is that Asian kids excel because they're more likely than others to come from stable two-parent families imbued with Confucian culture: Mom and Dad expect good grades and value hard work. There's also an immigrant effect: They are the children of parents or grandparents with the drive and brains to make it to America, the land of opportunity. That culture is hard to duplicate.

SES = Socio-Economic Status. In the case of Vietnames students, the religio-philosophic cultures are Buddhist and Catholic. That said, stable families, high expectations.

Michael Avenatti Handed Huge Defeat in Federal Court
https://dailycaller.com/2023/08/30/michael-avenatti-handed-huge-defeat-by-federal-court/

Quote
Disbarred attorney Michael Avenatti lost an appeal to overturn his sentence for extorting athletics giant Nike, according to a Wednesday court filing.

Avenatti rose to prominence for criticizing former President Donald Trump and representing adult film actress Stormy Daniels in her defamation lawsuit against Trump. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan denied Avenatti’s appeal in a 3-0 decision, with the former lawyer potentially facing 19 years in prison and a scheduled release set for January 2036, according to Reuters.

The former lawyer represented Los Angeles youth sports coach Gary Franklin and “used a quid pro quo to solicit a bribe from Nike … with the intent to defraud Franklin of the honest services owed to him by his attorney,” according to the Wednesday filing.

Avenatti was arrested in 2019 and sentenced to two and a half years in prison for extorting Nike, according to Reuters. He allegedly demanded a $1.5 million payment for Franklin, who supposedly had information that was deleterious to Nike.

Argentine Presidential Front-Runner Javier Milei: Biden a ‘Threat to Western Values’
https://www.breitbart.com/latin-america/2023/08/30/argentine-presidential-front-runner-javier-milei-biden-threat-western-values/

Argentina’s presidential front-runner Javier Milei described socialists as “garbage” and “human excrement” during a radio interview, to which Colombia’s far-left President Gustavo Petro, a former member of a Marxist guerrilla group, responded Tuesday by comparing Milei to Adolf Hitler.

Petro, a former member of the Marxist M19 guerrilla and Colombia’s first-ever leftist president, made the outrageous comparison on his Twitter account hours after Colombia’s RCN radio published an exclusive interview with Milei on Tuesday. During the interview, Milei suggested socialism was the greatest threat to his country.

“What is a socialist on the inside? He is garbage, he is human excrement,” Milei railed.

Elsewhere in the interview, Milei listed leftist values as “envy, hatred, resentment, unequal treatment before the law, theft and murder” and branded American President Joe Biden a “threat to Western values.”

“Biden is a left-wing president,” Milei said. “So it is not surprising that he is also putting the world’s leading power in check. Biden himself is a threat to Western values.”

Javier Milei loathes Joe Biden.

Cooler heads prevailed, but Olbermann took one last jab at the former college swimmer when the New York Post shared the story of their social media spat.

In the final barb, Olbermann called Gaines a "homophobe" for her fight to keep transgender women out of female sports.

Gaines hosts the "Gaines for Girls" podcast on OutKick, highlighting the issue.

YouTube mommy bloggers arrested on allegations of child abuse: 'Finally'

A YouTube mom of six and her business partner — both parenting and lifestyle influencers — have been arrested and charged with two counts of child abuse each, according to Utah officials.

Ruby Franke and her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt, who posted their latest YouTube video about victimhood and responsibility three days ago on their page called ConneXions, were arrested and charged on Wednesday after Santa Clara police received a dispatch call around 10:50 p.m. asking for help.

Upon arrival, police located a juvenile who appeared to be malnourished and emaciated with "open wounds and duct tape around the extremities," police said in a Thursday press release.

The juvenile's condition was "so severe" that authorities transported the child to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Busing Illegal Immigrants to Blue America Is Working: Democrats Deserve Blame for Biden’s Border Crisis

Quote
Republican border-state strategy to send illegal immigrants to Democrat-run cities and states is paying off.

On Thursday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul sent a letter to President Joe Biden begging for federal aid. Importantly, she finally acknowledged where the problem is coming from.

“This is a financial burden the city and state are shouldering on behalf of the federal government,” Hochul, a fellow Democrat, said of the illegal immigrants pouring into New York.

“I cannot ask New Yorkers to pay for what is fundamentally a federal responsibility,” the governor wrote. “And I urge the federal government to take prompt and significant action today to meet its obligation to New York State.”

In a press conference following release of the letter, Hochul further complained about illegal immigrants released into the country by the Biden administration.

The Dems wanted New York City and New York State to be sanctuary for illegal immigrants. How is that working out?

Again, according to the link, the judge may impose sentence, which under the law is removal from office. She "retired" before the sentence was handed down. Apparently no jail time.

But there is this from the link:

Quote
Additional criminal indictments against former Undersheriff Rick Sung, Captain James Jensen, and several others accused in this bribery, conspiracy scandal around concealed weapons permits remain.

"Those trials will be upcoming in the next several months," Rosen explained. "And those are criminal trials and the penalties for those involve state prison."

I missed that bit of news and am glad to hear she was at least tried and convicted. Thanks! She deserved time in the GreyBar Hotel, whether she participated in the Permits-for-$$/Services scheme or just let it continue with her knowledge. That scheme denied permits to people who had valid need but lacked $$.

I'm not convinced Concealed Carry permits are constitutional, but courts have not, that I am aware of, ruled on that specific question. And if courts have, Plessy vs. Ferguson was an obviously naive and wrong ruling (did the justices really believe that those who fought to separate would makes things equal for blacks? :thatsright: ).
If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.

I'm of the school that says, quite distinctly, that my concealed carry permit IS the 2nd Amendment to COTUS. In that sense, concealed carry "permits" are unconstitutional since 2A doesn't reference them.

You apparently have been sheltered from many court decisions relating to firearms. The SCOTUS decision last year (NYSR&PA vs. Bruen) decision basically allows the carrying of weapons outside the home. That decision does, however, leave it up to the individual states how to regulate same.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-says-second-amendment-guarantees-right-carry-guns-public-rcna17721

That said, I do have a concealed carry permit (enhanced) issued by the State of Arkansas. Note that IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT to have a concealed carry permit to carry concealed. This may seem odd to some people, but please refer to 2A above.

I choose to go through this process to obtain a concealed carry permit (enhanced):
  • Be fingerprinted by the AR state police
  • Undergo a background check by the AR state police
  • Pay a small fee to cover the administrative costs
  • Take a class by a licensed instructor on the concealed carry laws in my state
  • Demonstrate my competency with a pistol on a state-approved range, administered by said licensed instructor and pay him for his time

Once all these hoops are jumped through, the state police MUST issue my concealed carry (enhanced) permit.

I go through this shit because I carry concealed in OTHER STATES when I travel. It is helpful, indeed wise, to have a concealed carry permit should things go south. It provides credibility to LE and the courts.

You may ask, "What is this 'enhanced' business?" I'm glad you asked.

This "enhanced" permit allows me to carry concealed IN GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS, (except for police stations, courtrooms, and public schools (which continues to remain stupid)); allows me to carry on state college campuses; allows me to carry in restaurants that serve alcohol, and many other venues that are restricted from those who would not be permitted to carry in those venues.

That said, those who have not gone through the process I have laid out are NOT permitted to carry concealed in some of these "sensitive" places. "Sensitive places" includes things like arenas and halls open to the public. Imagine going to a baseball game or a concert when some shitstick decides to go postal and you're standing there with your dick in your hands, defenseless, because some f'n bureaucrat decided that the lawyers hold sway.

Not me. Virginia Tech showed me that is the fool's way to an early grave.

YMMV.

In Florida you no longer need a concealed carry permit. However, having one let you skip the mandatory and waiting. When buying a firearm.

Good point. Same in Arkansas. I forgot to mention that point. It can take a couple hours up to a couple days to get through the BS government background check if you don't have a CC permit.

Here in Galt's Gulch the worst wait I've ever had was 30 minutes when I bought the missus her M&P purse gun- during the Christmas season. No waiting period insanity; I just have to chant my mantra that even though he's a senator for this state, Mitt 'the Mittwit' Romney doesn't represent me, and he sure as hell ain't the HAMMFIC of me he thinks he is about 30 - 40 times a day just to keep my ears from ringing with the blood pressure build up. (I bought Rosary beads just to help me with that last part. :) )

At no point in my life have I felt that the state's - any state's - firearms hoops were so onerous that I would surrender my 4th Amendment protections in order to continue exercising my 2nd Amendment rights.
