No, these are the real thing.
SG's are marsupial. Flyers are not.
Two photos, first is a glider and the other, a flyer.

That's why we have youngsters that need release.  :lmao:

Well ... maybe we could just release them during the day and watch scamper across the green grass of the golf course ... to the safety of the trees on the other side?

Slightly off topic but when I was 10 I rescued a baby gray squirrel who had been orphaned by a hurricane (can't remember which one) and he lived with us for about 3 months until he was old enough to be released.  I named him Chippy (yeah, real original, right?) and he lived in an old bird cage we had.  He would sit on my shoulder while I walked around the house -- he was SO cute!

Of course, this drove our cocker spaniel friggin' nuts!!!!   :lmao:

We've raised and released a lot of squirrels.

Here's another squirrel story then.  I was 19 and home from college for the summer, sitting in the living room and reading a book.  All of a sudden, there's a lot of sliding, scratching and squeaking noises coming from the fireplace.  Apparently a squirrels nest had been built on top of the chimney and it had fallen through so the chimney was full of squirrels. My dad got a cardboard box and his heavy work gloves, opened the flue but he had enormous hands and couldn't get both of them up far enough to get the squirrels, who were clinging to the insides of the brick chimney. So I told him I'd try. He gives me the gloves and I reach in and grab a baby and put it in the box and my dad closes it. I successfully do this 3 more times (all babies) who all go into the box, no problem. One last time I reach in and realize I don't have a baby this time, I have mommy squirrel, who promptly bites the hell out of my index finger (her teeth went completely through it). I hung on to her, yanked her out of the chimney and sort of slam dunked her into the box! Then I closed the flue.

We take the box outside and let them go.  Mommy squirrel, not 30 minutes later, falls down the stupid chimney again and dad threw up his hands and said "I'm calling animal control!"  He also called a chimney guy to put a wire cover over the top of the chimney.

And I got to have a nice tetanus shot!   I still have the bite scar.

No, not really. They become "peopled", as in accepting human as friends.
If done right, they can be acclimated back into the wild. Just takes time.

What fun!

My ex-FIL had quite a few regular squirrel friends.  They would sit on his shoulders and eat the nuts he put in his shirt pockets.

Nowadays, we have a little red squirrel and a chipmunk who come up on the deck and are both fun to watch.  They enjoy the maple helicopter seeds that float down.  Now that my strawberry plants are ripening, we had to move the portable planter box from the wooden bench they were on, onto the very top of the stainless steel grill.  They were both getting into them I think.  After moving, so far, so good.

Thanks for the pics!

Not really sure.  They are a bit of a social animal, so I think they see you more as part of their colony.

Very labor intensive.

Are they anything like parrots who come to see their masters as lifelong family members ?

I don't want to de-rail the thread on flyers (they really do seem to be cool animals and can acclimate to people), but the "bidness" with parrots tends to be a little more complex.

First of all, when parrots are hand-raised (which is what Skul appears to be doing with his flyers), they ordinarily lose their innate fear of humans. This is a rather new phenomenon as parrots really haven't been widely seen as pets (hence the term "exotic" when used to describe them), therefore they as a collection of species, really haven't been out of the wild that long.

Once they're hand-raised, re-releasing parrots into the wild would be cruel, seems to me. They have not learned to identify, locate, and feed on naturally-found food. And they've not learned to be defensive necessarily, although their natural fear and thus flight is instinctive.

There are still many, many individual parrots that are out there that were captured in the wild and thus never learned to acclimate wholly to humans. Mrs. E and I have two such animals at present that we are fostering: the first is a Nanday conure and the second is an orange-winged Amazon.

Skul is completely correct when he says that parrots are social animals. They look at humans as part of their overall flock, that's to be sure, but the relationships are a little more complex than that. For example, Mrs E and I have a Solomon Islands eclectus parrot - female - who selected me as much more than part of her flock. She selected me as her mate. She exhibits all sorts of typical behavior along those lines -- tries to get me to feed her from my mouth, exhibits nesting behavior, raises her hind end, lays eggs, all that kind of stuff. And she's frustrated when I don't respond like a male eclectus would.

Our African grey, on the other hand, has not sexually matured yet. So we don't really know how she might react when she does mature -- if, in fact, she wants to procreate. Some individual parrots don't indicate an interest in procreation, oddly enough.

Despite the two foster birds being wild-caught, Mrs E and I are working with them. The conure has responded very well and once you get him away from his cage, he'll readily step up on your hand and otherwise accept you. The Amazon -- who is much older at about 50 years old -- is a much tougher nut to crack. In order to move him around, we have had to towel him. But with leather gloves on, I'm able to handle him (with him furiously biting the gloves which is definitely powerful enough to feel significantly through the gloves) and I was able to get him to step up yesterday for the first time.

These two birds are what the bird club calls "custodial birds" since it's unlikely they'll ever be adoptable. We hope to change that with the conure and maybe with time, also the Amazon.

One thing I meant to ask Skul about the flyers -- what about bites and other types of aggression? Do you see any of that?

Good run down on the parrots.. I don't mind at all.

The only time I've seen aggression was when they have babies. The mothers turn into box-sharks.
When the babes hit around five weeks, it begins to taper off.
When females are in heat, they get a tiny bit froggy.
Other than that, they seem quite docile most of the time.
We do know some people that do have bitey squirrels.  Many of them came from breeders or pet store.
Squirrels that haven't been properly peopled, have a tendency to nip and bite.
I would imagine it's about the same with parrots.

An update on the orange-winged Amazon (his name is Paulie):

Wearing thin leather gloves (an absolute necessity as an Amazon's bite is extremely strong, second to only that of a macaw or cockatoo), I got Paulie to step up and remain on my hand. Yes, he bit into the glove, but not as ferociously as he had before.

Stepping up on a human hand is a first for him. He's almost 50 years old, and I believe firmly that he's never had anybody work with him like Mrs E and I have.

And then this morning, I put him in the tub for a shower. Afterwards, I cornered him in the tub, again wearing gloves, and he stepped up freely and stayed on my hand all the way back to his cage.

He is learning that the big, bad human hand really ain't so bad after all.

That's just great that you could get Paulie to do that. For such an old bird, I'm very impressed.  :cheersmate:
Most people don't quite understand that they live that long.
Squirrels, when properly cared for, can live twelve years.

Caught the foxer taking a nap in the sack.
Over 200 grams now, and still growing.
Loves to wrestle with your fingers.

Eyes opened a few days ago. He's exploring and being a pain in the ass.

Too cute.

Three of the youngsters will be going to their release home tomorrow.
The foxer can be placed in a release cage now for acclimation.
The two young grays, will need another six or seven weeks before they're ready.
The flyers are all doing well. Piglet, does not like having the foxer in the house.
She went after him the other night, and all hell broke loose.
Poor Moses was yelling his heart out.

Moses is a young foxer we took in when he was very young.

He was named Moses, because the nest resembled a basket.

Moses is pretty much an adult now, and will do fine.
I transferred him and the two young grays earlier today.
The new home is fully capable of caring for all of them.
Moses will be acclimated and released in about three weeks.
The two young grays will be there in about 6-7 weeks.
We're in a warmer climate, so temps are not really an issue.
Going to miss the little monsters.

Little flyers are doing fine. We do have a young girl with a seizure problem.
She's a sweet little girl that just locks up when she gets exited.
I mean literally, locks up. No movement at all.
I've heard of this before, and it seems to diminish as they age.
She's a nice squirrel that we hope to re-home to a caring lady in Virginia.

When the wheel gets up to speed, they stop running and ride it. Then do it again.

It looks like you put these rascals in cages. Do they mix well? Or do you have to separate them? With parrots, it's not a good idea to mix them up, unless they're a breeding pair or bonded to each other.

Flyers are never mixed with other types of animals.
They are somewhat social, and will form a colony with other flyers, especially if they are raised together.
