On a lighter side of general topics....

Where have you been in the continental US that you think most folks haven't (places that most folks have probably at least heard of).

Bath, Maine.

It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

Ding dong is just a couple buildings and a few people. I used to stop in at a little gas station/Cafe and have a Burger and beer with this old boy who ran the place with his wife. Chew the fat and get stories of lore about the area. This old boy met his future bride when she was on a date with a fellow named Elvis Presley. Never know what you will learn talking to older folks.

Gosh, some great places listed in this thread.  I guess the most recognizable ones for me would be:

Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty on the same trip)
Boulder Dam
Chicago Museum of Science & Industry, and the Aquarium
New Orleans streetcars
Library of Congress, National Archives, the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and Washington Monument in DC
Boston Common
Fort Sumter and USS Yorktown (CV 18) in Charleston
US Air Force Museum in Ohio
Gettysburg battlefield, several times
Annual Christmas Day 'Washington Crossing the Delaware' reenactment in NJ
Fredericksburg-Chancellorsville Campaign battlefield
St. Louis Gateway Arch (Didn't go up in it, though)
The Alamo
Independence Hall in Philly
Zeppelin hangars at Lakehurst (formerly NAS, some other alphabet soup now)
...and a bunch of others.

Hey DAT, when did the USS Wasp replace the USS Yorktown CV-10??
You got off your ass, now get your wife off her back.

Quote
Ding Dong, Texas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ding Dong, Texas

Ding Dong is an unincorporated community in Central Texas. It is situated on the Lampasas River, eight miles south of Killeen in southwestern Bell County. Ding Dong was named because of two early settlers in the town, Zulis Bell and Bert Bell, who opened a store and hired an artist, Cohn Cohen Hoover, to make a sign for it. The Bells instructed the sign painter to make a sign. Hoover painted a sign with two bells on it. Inside the bells, Hoover painted the initials of the Bell brothers. Underneath one bell he painted the word "Ding" and the word "Dong" under the other bell. Over the years, because of this sign, this community became known as Ding Dong.

A college classmate and roommate of mine and I spent spring break my senior year in college, at Anaconda, Montana.

We went there because we didn't want to go where "everybody else" was going, and besides, it boasted the world's tallest smokestack.

It was great.

It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

I'd guess less than 5%.  Most of the fat tourists (my in-laws run a B-n-B in the area) prefer to go to the rim, look over the edge, say "Yep, that's a damned big ditch", and then head over to the El Tovar Hotel for cocktails.
