I don't see a fan/heat sink on that list. :whistling:

An X6... sounds nice.

Took me about four hours from start to finish, but that includes the hour it took me to drive down the street for a fan/heatsink that did NOT come with my CPU.  And the time it takes to unpackage everything. :p

 :rotf: Pretty much.

I meant four hours from having a pile of taped-up boxes to having a working computer and being online checking my email.

Hell it can take 2 hours just to load all the S/W.

Actually, I won't be able to start it until late tomorrow afternoon or maybe even Saturday morning.  :bawl: I have to drive to McKinney to the bank (which SUCKS because it's 40 miles ONE WAY) and then I have an appointment  in Sherman with some vocational rehab lady in the afternoon. I don't know how long  that will take. Hopefully, not more than an hour.

BTW, I have to work slow because I have little feeling in my fingers due to my neck problems. Thank God for spell check!!

Day-Um!

I have had my eye on that AMD processor for a while. What MB are you using and RAM speed? I still feel ya'll need to look at an SSD (Solid State Drive). They are spendy, $300.00 for 80 gigs of storage but if you partition it, install the OS on a 30 gig partition, that leaves 50 gigs for applications. I have Office 2007, Firefox, Photoshop, DVDShrink, DVD Decrypter, uTorrent, MIRC, and a bunch of other shit installed on that 50 gig partition and still have 40+ gigs of free storage.

The fracking speed of an SSD cannot be made-up with RAM speed!

I'd like an SSD, but I've read a few bad things about them. Basically, they're not as reliable as they could be (as compared to SATA or PATA drives)  and when they fail, you're screwed. At least with an SATA or pATA drive, one MAY be able to salvage the platters and install them in an operating drive. Check out Newegg or 3bTech. I've seen them on sale lately.

Hardly, at worst XP 64 bit, more than likely Windows 7. I kind of like Windows 7 and all of the stuff is certified for it. There's a thread  where I laid out the specs for my motherboard, case, etc. http://www.conservativecave.com/index.php/topic,45798.0.html

The proc is an AMD Phenom II X6 1055 (the slower and cheaper one) and the RAM is 2- 2GB sticks of Super Talent DDR3 -1333

This is why I bought the Thecus NAS to hold my archive data. Windows 7 will automatically run the SSD TRIM to keep the data defraged so I have no worries if I lose the drive. Since the late 90's using NT, I have always stored my sensitive archive data on a seperate hard drive and burning the most sensitive stuff (pictures of my cats - it's a wife thing), on CD's.
The best part of using an SSD, aside from the shear speed, and using a NAS, I have actually removed eight hard drives from my systems, changed from 1K watt power supplies to 450 watt power supplies, dropped the temp in my computer room by 3 degrees, and cut 10 bucks off of my monthly power bill. Believe it or not, that 3 degree temp drop is a huge thing.

ETA:

You are correct about salvaging dead drives. I have swapped the circuit boards and platters between drives (Torx tools not with standing), to resurrect them. Do you remember the old freezer trick?  :-)

Well, almost. It boots up and loads the dvd for win7. However, the hard drive I'm trying to use doesn't want to cooperate. I have an SATA drive that I'll cannibalize after dinner.

went out and got a 320 GB SATA from Best Buy. $50+ tax. The Windows 7 DVD gave me some trouble and it finally cooperated. I'm finalizing some motherboard drivers as I type from the Gigabyte CD. So, it's up and running!!   :hyper: :-)

What?
Why?

SATA either works or it doesn't. I have however witnessed Vista AND Windows 7 DVD's take 20 minutes+ to load to the OS install prompts when booting from the DVD to install the OS. The first time I ran into that, with a Vista install, I must have cycled power and rebooted from the DVD 10 times and tried four different hard drives. Used my laptop to grab a fresh ISO of Vista Ultimate via Bit Torrent and STILL had the boot delay. I finally walked away and went out to dinner. Came back 1.5 hours later and the machine was ready for input.

The SATA drive that I had in another computer was used for storage. Windows didn't explain it to me, but it said it couldn't use that drive to install itself on. No Biggie. I ran up to Best Buy and got a deal on a 320 GB SATA drive ($50 +tax) I did put my storage drive back into its original PC and it works fine. :clueless:

I also ran into a LOT of prompts for a cd/dvd driver when trying to install. Somehow, it finally got past that issue. I have read that Lite On dvd rws don't like to read burned DVDS, so THAT could have been it.
