Windows XP auto restart - can it be disabled?

Every once in a while, WinXP has a pop up that happens that says it needs to restart because of some update or another (but it never tells me what the updates are).  It then does a 5 minute countdown.  I can cancel it, but a few minutes later, it will just do it again.  I'd really like to disable that function.  Is this possible and, if so, how?

Check your Control Panel for update settings.  You should have a little yellow shield on the toolbar next to the clock while updates are downloading.  Double-click on it for a list of updates.

I keep mine set to download but not install the updates automatically on one computer, and on the other I have automatic updates turned off.

Okay, I think I got it now.  I changed a setting so that it will download updates automatically, but not install them until I want to.  Thanks.   :cheersmate:

If it happens to bug you any more, you can also disable the auto-reboot from the group policy editor.
