I am so mad right now: What happened in my daughters class today (UPDATE)

She is a Senior and was in her last hour of class. One of the kids made the comment to the teacher that he was
old.

The teacher is in his 30's and to a lot of kids that is old. He's also white.

The teacher then went off on a rant.

He said "Well I'm doing pretty well, I've made it past the life expectancy of most black people, and one in three black man are in prison"

My daughter was the only person in class that was not white. She said the kids all laughed and it made her feel really out of place. She was like hey..hello I'm here. She said he also said something about latinos, but at that point she was too upset to pay attention, what he had already said was enough. She left out of the room crying and went straight to the counselor. She said the counselor also took offense and was going to talk to the Principal. We have a meeting with them in the morning at 8:00.

She told me that she has always felt like he didn't like her, and now she knows why. HOW SAD IS THAT?

This is part of what is wrong with the world today and why we can't move past this shit. There are teachers and people who kids look up to making comments like this. WHY???? I'm so angry! That comment had no business being made in the class and what relation does that have to do with kids making an off handed joke about him being old?

UPDATE here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=1369071

109. UPDATE: We had our meeting this morning.

We had our meeting and my husband also came. First we started with the counselor, and then the Principal came in. The Principal asked if we would feel comfortable having the teacher come in as well, apparently according to her, he felt bad about the situation. We said that we wanted to talk to just her and the counselor first. The Principal related to us that he was not the type of teacher that she had known throughout the years to make an intentional comment like that.

She said that he told her that in his Philosophy class which was 1st hour, they had talked about this "new study" that came out which involved life expectancy of black people and prison rates. He said that there were a couple of students in the Circuits class who had also been in his first hour Philosophy class. He claimed to the Principal that THOSE students brought up the study.

My daughter spoke up and said that is not true, that's a lie. He is the one that said it, no other student brought that up. She then told the Principal that she felt like she was believing the teacher over her. She said if you don't believe me, ask your daughter she was in the class with me. Needless to say, both the Counselor and the Principal apologized and said that they hoped in talking with both my daughter and the teacher that something positive could come out of this, maybe a broader discussion. I'm not comfortable with his "lie" though, why try to blame the students for bringing it up, if you are sincere?

I'm not sure what's going to happen. The Teacher never was brought into the room. When we came out, he was no where around, even though he supposedly felt so bad that he wanted to talk to us all and make it right. His presence was never offered up again after that initial offer. They did ask her if she wanted to set up a meeting with the Principal, Counselor, Teacher and her, and she said that would be ok she guessed. She also said that she wanted to drop his class, and they said they would look into it, to see if it was even possible considering it was 4 weeks into the Trimester. I still can't believe he blamed the students who were in the earlier class of bringing that up again. I think he is just trying to put it back in the box wrapped in neat little bow, so that it takes the heat off of him at having not explained what he was talking about, if he truly was talking about a study or something that occurred earlier in the day. My daughter wasn't a part of the 1st hour class and from her standpoint it came out of nowhere. It was not mentioned that it was a study.

Maybe there will be another update when my daughter gets out of school. We will see, I do know I'm not comfortable with cowardly blaming it on the students for bringing it up. I'm hoping that once the Principal talks to her daughter about what happened, then it will exonerate my daughters claim of what happened. If it was a study and a conversation that happened earlier, the teacher should have explained that, and not just came out of nowhere with it, out of context, for students who were not present for the earlier conversation.

We will see. Thank you all for lending me your ear so to speak. I really appreciate having the opportunity to vent about this.

I think the "so" is out of place.

Instead of: I am SO mad right now

It probably should be: SO I am mad right now

A glaring omission or lie here.

The teacher stated that his first hour students brought up the study. She is in the last hour and said no student brought it up. So she is speaking for the first hour students. Which, unless she was there, she knows nothing about.

Second, this is a philosophy class. Isn't that usually a moonbat subject? Isn't that supposed to be a free exchange of ideas?

Maybe I'm biased being married to a former teacher, but I don't believe the student.

Everything out of you libs mouth is race related.  America's first black president, first black FLOTUS, race race race..........Geez.  Stating facts shouldn't be offensive.  REALLY!  If he was lying then I could see you getting upset but he stated facts from a study.  Are you trying to whitewash facts?  :???:

SO...I guess the next step is to take the black, white, brown, red and yellow crayons out of the crayon box, huh? ....I wonder if the DUmmies have ever heard of "the blue people"?

Your kid may not do well in school, but I will give her an A for knowing how to play the race card.

WTF---------School for me was to learn what is what and did we ever.  We went to school with both kids from the German era and kids that had parents with tattoos on their wrists.   History my favorite subject pulled no punches , it had only been say less then 20 years after the war,  and here we were in a world with children of the survivors.  Both sides, we kids born after the war in America needed to be taught both sides of the War.

At no time did I ever see a Jew leave class when the German side was presented, or see a German walk out on a class about the Hollicoust.     Facts were given plain and simple, it was up to us to research if we wished the history.

What the hell is going on in schools today when Facts are to be not mentioned ????  There is NO reason in today's computer age this girl could not have done a research to refute the teachers claims.   No reason she could have called for a rebuttal of his facts.

She was so offended by the teacher, well she should have instead of complaining gone to the computer to research in an hour if he was correct or not.     What is the problem if facts are facts, can we make facts go away with tears and denial ???

Since when do students of young age demand their teachers teach others what they themselves have been taught from family or outside sources ??

First, I don't believe a word of that.

Second, the teachers union will protect the teacher if it did happen.

Third, there are going to be racist bouncys galore until election day.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Hi I'm SunsetDreams [View all]
Welcome to all new DU members. I hope you will enjoy it here as much as I do. I am married and have one daughter who will be leaving the nest in a few years. I live in deep red country, and like to see myself as a bright shining blue star in a sky full of red hues. It's not easy living in an area surrounded by Republicans, but I truly believe in my role of changing a heart and mind one person at a time. DU for me has became a safe haven, where I can come in gather knowledge and fellowship with Democrats, and be refueled to go out and fight yet another day.

Thank you for this forum for new members. I will do my best to try and help in anyway I can

Poor dear lives in a racist red state.  The teachers must all be racists Republicans then.

I'm confused by this bouncy. DUmmie says her daughter is 4 weeks into the trimester. Did the teacher impregnate her and is this whole story about an abortion?? I don't understand.  :whistling:
