If Yellowstone Park erupted and became the largest volcanic explosion in recorded history, and the gulf stream winds are eastward, then would you prefer to be living in Seattle or Des Moines?

Just a rhetorical question of course.

1. Seattle or Des Moines makes about 2 days of difference

Australia might give you a year before the climatic effects bit

2. I'll stay where I am, thank you!

Quote

4. Exactly. Here's my theory.

It is the jet stream, not the gulf stream, that will push the molten ash eastward. Then the gulf stream moving northeast will move the billowing clouds of fire, ash, and rock into the north Atlantic circling the entire globe before it returns to the west coast. You should be sitting pretty and completely out of danger.

There is one catch, of course. I have no idea what I'm talking about, which means the odds are great that I'm completely wrong about the whole theory. That's why I like the DU Lounge. I don't have the stress of being right about anything.

It yellowstone erupted, you retarded douchebag, it wouldn't matter where you are, or where they wind is blowing; pretty much everything on the earth would be gone. Yellowstone is the largest volcano in the world. It is said that the last time it erupted, it literally shook the earth off its axis.

I saw that on some geography show a few years back. If I understood what they were saying is that it isn't just one really big mega volcano, but a number of them, all large, that could erupt, maybe at the same time, maybe not. Scary shit to be honest about it. But there ain't nothing I or anyone else can do about it so I don't worry about it.

If it does happen, I think I'll get me a fifth of Jack Daniels, sit on the front porch and get drunk, and watch it all go down. Then I will kiss my ass goodbye.   :-)

Which is why if I was given the choice of living anywhere if Yellowstone blew, I'll take Cody, Wyoming.

I mean, I liked living in Gillette back in high school, but shit, you want front-row seating if you're gonna witness the end of the freakin world, man.

I think I know what you are talking about. I saw a couple of things on discovery channel, science channel, and nat geo about it. They are pretty fascinating shows.

You got that right. Having front row seats for something like that is the best.

Yellowstone erupts all the time. So frequently in fact as to be able to be faithfully predicted, hence, Old Faithful. I don't miss the yellowstone thread though.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

I am talking a major eruption, not just letting some steam off.. There are various areas through out the park that are hot spots. They also have a power plant that gets the steam to drive the turbines from yellow stone. It is pretty cool.

I never been to yellow stone, but with all the shows I seen on it. I feel as though I been there a couple of times. I have an uncle who lives in Montana. He has been trying to talk me in to going out so we can go camping at yellow stone for a couple of weeks.

I think, (and hope) that all the "letting the steam off" keeps a major eruption from occurring.

You and me both. I would hate to see what could happen if it let loose... The devastation would be totally catastrophic.

If Yellowstone Park erupted, you primitives would cry "stochastic terrorism" and blame Michele Bachmann, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, etc. etc.

DUmmie was watching the same show I was yesterday morning. It was about the 2012 TEOTWAWKI and the various ways it could happen. The Yellowstone eruption was the one they defined as a species ender. The  last thing they said was none are likely though and we'll wake up the next day like we always do.

The last time Yellowstone erupted the area that is now Nebraska was more like Kenya in Africa then what it is now and the blast alone was felt as afar as where Des Moines Iowa is now if I recall. I wish I could remember the show I heard this about it but it might have been NOVA on PBS. The last thing anyone wants to see is that thing cook off.
