Well, for starters, I'd like to be able to read music . . . so I know what the deuce I'm singing!
Well, depending on your voice range, you're going to be written in one of two clefs. That's where the A, B, C, D, E, F, G thingies come from. And their associated sharps and flats.
Then there's rhythm. Music is divided up to represent time by assigning a time signature. That's what determines the basic unit of measurement. Have a bunch of things called "measures" or "bars" lined up, each one filled up with either notes or rests and you're almost there.
Add a key signature, which automatically assigns flats or sharps to specific notes, and you're done!
