Yuck!
« on: August 16, 2014, 02:43:18 PM »
I've been vocal about how much I loathe sweet potatoes.  The other day, I was looking through a potato & veg supplier, J.R. Simplot's marketing info.  They were pushing the dreaded sweet potatoes.  Here are some suggestions for how to foist them on the public:

Cut on the bias and:

Top with a maple-oat crumble
Top with a drizzle of chipotle aioli and chopped cilantro
Top with goat cheese crumbles, dried cranberries and rosemary
Top with a mixture of cooked, crumbled sausage and sauteed kale and onions.  Garnish with sour cream
Top with dulce de leche flavored ice cream and caramel sauce.

:lmao:  They expect to move product this way.  Barf.

I hate sweet potatoes too. Hi5 for being brave enough to stand out and proudly proclaim what you stand for. sweet potatoes are a weed, nothing good can come from them.

Thanks Mr. Mannn!  Also disgusting is a sweet potato chip, where the horrible thing is sliced thin and baked, no salt added.  This is a Michelle Obama school vending machine special, and it is vile.  I took leave of my senses once in the break room, and actually put one in my mouth.  It sticks in your teeth and WILL NOT GO AWAY.

BE AFRAID.

I can't say I hate them.

Unfortunately for us, sweet potatoes are one of the best things you could eat.

Very high in vitamins and minerals.

Momma's sweet potato bread, sweet potato pie, candied yams.....oh they were good and I miss them.

I wouldn't think there is much of a difference using them (or yams) in place of pumpkin.

I love carrot cake, could probably replace the carrots with the potatoes.

I dislike sugary concoctions on sweet potatoes.  Marshmallows and brown sugar don't belong on sweet potatoes.

Slice them just under a 1/4" thick, sprinkled with a little cinnamon and put them in a dehydrator for several hours.  They can also be used to make cookies.

Both make excellent homemade treats for dogs and are good for them.

Terra sells a great spicy sweet potato chip, or they used to.  I haven't seen the spicy chips in a while... if you find them, buy a bag.  The regular ones are bland and tasteless.

Heathen's all in this thread. You add stuff to compliment the delicious taste of the SP. I often nuke them like a baked potato and put a bit of peanut butter, honey, and cinnamon on them OR just butter and cinnamon. Good stuff! My mother made them into sweet potato fries the other night--always a favorite. ;-)

Have to yet not met a vegetable or plant that I did not learn to like.

Sweet potatoes I have been fed since birth and like today.  Acquired taste from upbringing.

So a couple months yes weeks and weeks ago I picked up a bag of a half dozen sweet potatoes.   Somewhere down the line 2 got lost behind my toaster.  Unlike white potatoes they did not rot and stink to high heavens, they just sat quietly growing out eyes that looked like dead twigs on a tree branch.
When I found them the eyes had grown out to perhaps 2-3 inches long were a dark brown.

Mother told me to place them in glass containers just big enough to hold them up straight and add water. Keep them in a dim light corner of the kitchen counter and let them rest with 3/4 of them dry and out of the water, forget about them she said, add fresh water every week or less and watch for the roots to start growing out of the bottom.

Forgot them I did for perhaps 3 weeks and one day I noticed green leaves growing on the eye stems.   There on the bottom of the potato were some small roots growing in the water.

Science that was happening in my kitchen.   The potato itself was not rotting, still as hard as a baseball but life of some sort was changing with little more then water and dim light, patience and time.

Interesting food stock, if one does not care for the taste they can be used as talking point as these things once put into a sun lit window will amaze the kids as they will grow so fast as a vine to take over in weeks the area they are placed in.  After a year or so depending on the size of the potato the plant will still be grinding out vines and the plant itself still as hard as a rock.  Just change the water now and then.

Hydro planting comes to mind here.

I forgot all about that.  My mom used to grow the dark yam as a house plant.  She even had a special shallow planter that was made just for that use.

I'm going to get a yam to grow my next trip to the store.

Thanks Vesta for the memory and reminding me.

Hi5. You were odd numbered, not even.  The only odd number I can tolerate is a 5 for some reason.
Dori was at 299. I can't stand that! So now you're at an even 300.

Dori prepare to be patient it may take 8-10 weeks before the vines begin to take off and when they do, they do with a bang, vines grow 2-3 inches a day.

I am going to hang out on the sites that teach how to grow avacardo  seeds  the big things that we throw away and other things we can start in water.

Fall will be here in 6 weeks or so and having living plants around will cheer me up on the gray days of late October until early April.  No living flowers in the house, these things are for outside where God planted them.

I have had people ask me why  I planted oak trees in strange places in my yard.     Not me I answer, either God or the squirrels put them there and who am I to mess with the plans of either of them  ??

Please let me know how you make out Dori, the potato peels from white potatoes I threw into a large planter full of plain old dirt and forgot about on the back deck are now over a foot high.

Awesome to watch life spring from what we discard as garbage, morph into something valuable in one way or the other a kind of symbiotic relationship on our little blue marble way out in space.

At the Walmart today, I ran into baked potato chips made out of sweet potatoes and beets.  This is all the Wookie's fault, of course.

That sounds like something you'd find at the feed store, in the "goat" section.
