Eat Your Around the World
« on: July 08, 2014, 04:36:06 PM »
You've got a month off. Money is no object. You can go anywhere in the world you want to go, stay where you want to stay, see what you want to see, and very importantly, eat what you want to eat. You only get to go to one country though. The culture and sights figure 50% in your choice of destination, and the local cuisine weighs the other 50% in your choice of destination. Where would you go?

I'll start. I'd go to China, spending my first three days hiking 10 mile sections of the Great Wall. Then I'd spend 10 days visiting some of China's fabulous archeology and paleontology sites, and some of her great museums. Then I'd go to rural northern China, up in the wheat belt, where the staple is bread, not rice. I'd eat where the locals eat and not at tourist-busy restaurants.

Any butcher shop in the country offers glazed roast duck and Chinese sausage. The butcher will chop them up in bite-sized pieces. Then next door to the produce shop for some green onions and shallots. Then to the bakery for some sticky rolls or any of the hundred other types of northern Chinese bread. Finally to the grocery store for some local beer. Simple fair but hardy and delicious. That's how I'd eat, where the work-a-day Chinese eat. Then I'd spend whatever time I had left zipping around the countryside in China's bullet trains, shooting videos and stills. Then back home from a super memorable trip.

Pretty sure Anthony Bourdain has a reality show about this subject.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Hmmm, well, half the brush wars raging on this planet have to do with natural resources: oil, grazing land for cattle, and water. The ability to cultivate food is the largest part of it. Read Atlantic Monthly editor, Robert Kaplan's 'The Coming Anarchy'. He has a lot more to say on the subject. It's required reading at The War College. You can find the condensed version online.

A month isn't long enough.

BUT- I happen to agree in theory with Thomas about living and seeing things not in the typical guidebooks. When you see how other people live then you begin to understand them just a little bit.

Don't need to read it if you haven't. I got a chart:

Most wars, at least in the book's view, are due to the lower two tiers.

I can see I'll have to start another thread for present company, something involving RCs and Moon Pies maybe. Is that a kit car in your icon, or the real McCoy?

Yes, I'd say your triangle chart is pretty accurate...with a few notable exceptions, like WWI. The planet's population will be ten billion by 2050. What then? The third world will go food shopping with assault rifles and RPGs. If you can't take what your neighbor has, then you starve.

Aussie down under out back and I'll have whatever the mates are having......RC Colas and Moon Pies are hard to come by these days.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Not my chart. Some shmo name Maslow or something...

Maslow subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of humans' innate curiosity. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, some of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans. Maslow used the terms Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and Love, Esteem, Self-Actualization and Self-Transcendence needs to describe the pattern that human motivations generally move through.

Quote
The underlying causes of World War I, which began in the Balkans in late July 1914, are multifactorial. Among these factors were political, territorial and economic conflicts between the great European powers in the four decades leading up to the war. Additional factors were militarism, a complex web of alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. The immediate origins of the war, however, lay in the decisions taken by statesmen and generals during the July Crisis of 1914 caused by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie by Gavrilo Princip, an ethnic Serb and Yugoslav nationalist from the group Young Bosnia, which was supported by the Black Hand, a nationalist organization in Serbia.

That's pretty much covered by Maslow, that last grouping in Esteem...

I've enjoyed eating local foods wherever I go, but my favorite food memory is of taking my son to the Cheesecake Factory on Waikiki. We walked over from the Hale Koa R&R Center on a beautiful sunny afternoon.

Yep. Rolling down the saccharine path to junk food extinction...like Twinkies almost did. I like Oz. My wife and I took a two-week vacation in Perth back in 1994. Some of the best sugar-laden junk food to be had in Australia is at the local Woolworths ("Woolies"). They make a lot of their confections right in the store and sell it by the tray.

Chinese food sounds great.  When I was a kid we had a couple of local Chinese restaurants that served Cantonese style food.

Can't seem to find it cooked the old way anymore.

It's the economy. They cook with engine oil now instead of peanut oil.

Libs have been predicting overpopulation to where we are overpopulated with overpopulation predictions. They never seem to come true.

If your'e going to do that, you may as well go "Andrew Zimmern".
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”
