Which Car Is The Biggest Death Trap?
« on: June 12, 2008, 07:50:19 PM »
What was supposed to be an informed discussion about poorly-engineered vehicles at Jalopnik derailed into an orgy of crash test videos.  This one comes with some bitchin' music...

Don't bogart that VW, man...

French engineering at it's finest.  Yikes.

Geo Metros are up there as far as American cars are concerned.

They were a joint venture by Suzuki and GM that were manufactured at CAMI in Ingersoll, Ontario. Geo Metros actually became Chevy Metros in the U.S. and Canada in later models.

The F-150 did not do very well in the first video, never seen a truck fold up so fast.

That music gave me a headache.  :-)

That Cherry Amulet at 3:38 in the video is one of those Chinese cars I think.

The Chinese Brilliance SUV is the orange truck in the first video's freeze frame.  That and their BS6 sedan folded up like wet paper bags.

Its funny how the Russian cars always look 30 years older than any other car made. So much for single party rule encouraging innovation I guess. The Chinese are trying hard to make their "Cherry" line of automobiles 'look' like Japanese cars but these crash tests are good for showing which actually has good engineering inside them. I loved the music in that first vid! Always been a fan of Techno.

The Metro was actually a safe little car.  It averaged 55 mpg.  It was built by Suzuki.

The worst and most unsafe car has to go to the Corvair.  With the location of the gas tank in the front, it always burst into flame, and roasted the occupants.  Thousands of people died in those vehicles.

It was the car that launched Ralph Nader's career.

My father hated the Corvair up until the day he died...he had a best friend buy one new, and every weekend my dad was trying to keep the thing running.......they were junk when new....even worse now!

Last weekend, I drove a 1968 Corvair factory turboed convertible.  There were only about 100 made.  It would make a great project car but I would never drive it on a daily basis.

You could have it for $8000.  Restored it would go for 10 times that.  The car was in excellent condition.

Actually the Corvair is unjustly maligned in so many ways.....in my youth, I owned several, and there was nothing better in a Minnesota winter.....they would start and run at 35 below, and go through snow drifts as high as the hood....those cars got me to work on days when I was the only one to make it......
