This Time .. I Need A Plumbers Help!
« on: April 16, 2013, 06:43:45 PM »
I am trying to replace a cartridge in my shower.

There is no indication on the cartridge of maker or model.
(pictures below)

My question: Can I just replace this old one (10-12 years) with another type/model?

Thanks

If it was me...

Wait a minute-- it was me, five years ago next month!

OK...when it was me, I pulled everything out, cut the supply lines four inches above the floor, plugged in PEX pipe and a whole new faucet and shower head.  If you look behind the access panel I cut in the guest bedroom wall, it's ugly as all getout, but it works, and I know exactly jack about plumbing.

Yes, most will work. Make sure your replacement piping is the same kind, PVC vs. CPVC. Also make sure that you use pipe glue and you've fitted the parts BEFORE you glue them together. It is actually a very simple repair, just gaining access to it is the hassle. If your fittings are copper, you may be able to reuse the fittings, but be very carfull removing them, don't crimp or bend them, they split easily. By the way, CPVC is generally bettwer for hot water applications, PVC for cold, but are quite often used interchangeably, especially by do it DIY. I,m not a professional plumber, just a professional DIY'er.

Take the photo (use a phone) to your local hardware.   :-)  I've done that.

If that doesn't work, the people at mine are getting a couple dozen cookies on Saturday in gratitude.

But, seriously, it looks like a Moen that I had to replace last year in a ranch house.  I didn't know what model and the folks at the hardware store gave me a tool from a Moen kit with which I could pull the cartridge.  Took it in and we made our best, and correct guess, on the replacement.  And now I have my own little thingamajig.

Once I got the Biatch of a collar/nut off , pulled the old cartridge and got the cartridge replacement @ Home Depot ($29.00) .. I fixed it in less than 5 minutes!
(AND .. I'll take pictures to prove it .. if necessary!)

I am now an old pro at this stuff!

I'm printing up my New Business cards as I post this!

Is this gonna become another thread that would be better in the Short Bus forum??    :-)
