Here in Zone 9B, we can start a little earlier than most to plant.

Herbs in our whiskey barrel.

Might try some jalapenos and if I can find one, a cayenne bush.

Garden tilled last weekend, sprouts inside ready to go.  Still frosty at night up in 7B.  Cucumbers, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, melons, squash, potatoes and corn on deck though. 

Just pulled the rest of our kale and have a few cabbages and some brussel sprouts that will be harvested this weekend.

How do you plant your potatoes? I tried using the trash can method, but it didn't work. Of course, it was WAY too hot.

I read an interesting method for growing potatoes in old tires.

Basically you "Seed" the first tire and then keep adding tires and soil as the plant grows until pickin' time then kick the whole lot over and roll the tires around to free the contents.

Probably need to cut a couple holes here and there to assist with drainage .

I read that, too. However, Mrs W560 wouldn't allow tires in the backyard.

The trash can is kind of the same thing. Seed it in about 3" of soil, and whenever the plant grew to about a foot, put 8 inches of soil or so and keep doing that until there's about 2" left from the top.

Like I said before, though, it was too hot.

So what you do is this:

Cut the potatoes, making sure there is an eye on each section, put them in a paper sack with wood ash, and toss. Lay them on a sheet until they dry out.

Till the ground, and push to the side all the extra dirt.

Plop em in the ground, and lightly cover.

Go out every night after work and cover the potatoes with more dirt as the sprouts sprout.  Keep piling dirt until the pile gets to be a foot high, piling around the sprouts. 

Then leave them alone, aside from watering.

When the sprouts die off and wither, wait one week, and then harvest with a fork, and dig up the potatoes.  No need for digging.

How much space do you need for potatoes and what kind of a yield do you get per plant?

We planted our potatoes in a 10x10, each plant yielded about 3-7 baby potatoes.  I want to say it was about 45-60 days total.  We had enough to eat on for a few months, but we don't eat them every day.  Best tasting potatoes you ever had.
