I saw this at The Daily Sheeple and figured that it was worth a mention here.

So sang Tommy Steele who topped the British charts with the song of the same name, in 1957.

Water is a chemical compound and has the formula H2O. It’s a liquid at standard temperature and pressure but also exists naturally in the solid and gaseous state. It covers just over 70% of the Earths surface and is vital for all life forms as we know them. Only 2.5% of the water on Earth is fresh water, and almost 99% of that is ice and aquifer water, the rest, a touch under 0.3% is found in rivers, lakes and the air that we breathe. Is it any wonder then that water is contested so fiercely in some parts of the world?

After Katrina people were lacking basic amenities including the ability to find enough drinking water that was not contaminated. After Sandy, people once again stood in line to collect bottled water from the government. Across the globe disasters both natural and man made affect the water supply, almost immediately, either through cessation of supply or contamination of supply.

It’s not a major stretch of the imagination to assume that should a country be hit by major civil disobedience that the population could be rapidly brought to heel by restriction of the one thing that only rarely can we survive longer than three days without. I can’t think of an easier way to subdue parents than to remove their ability to give their children a drink. I can’t think of an easier, and more cost effective way to bring a neighbourhood to its knees than to ring fence it militarily and cut off the water supply. Block the major exits from New York City and cut off the water supply and you instantly curtail the ability of a large proportion of the population to survive for even a week. At this point the population will turn on each other, killing not for the latest phone but for a cheap bottle of mineral water, a positive boon to those who advocate population reduction. Those who survive such a scenario will soon succumb to diseases associated with lack of water for hygiene such as typhus and typhoid, and to those of contaminated water such as cholera and leptospirosis.

Those who control the water supply, without doubt in my mind, control the population. A thousand guns and a 25 year supply of food will not keep you alive if you don’t have access to drinking water.

The bolded lines jump out.  We go through all of the prep stuff to acquire equipment, weapons, food . . . maybe even a 'bug-out vehicle,' and water falls through the cracks--until it's absolutely needed.  The rest is here:

If you can make it to the wild, a small bottle of alum comes in handy for removing particles from muddy water. Put a drop of alum in a quart jar and swirl it around to take out the particles and then boil to purify.

The old 5 gallon a flush toilets would come in handy at a time like that. The thoughts might kill you but you could live several days off of what's in the toilet tank......even longer off of what's in a 40 gallon water heater. Damn low flush toilets and tankless water heaters at a time like that.

The water in the tank is just tap water.

Sounds like the old time water wars out west. Hundreds of men and woman died trying to control the water for their live stock.    People up hill of a stream dammed the flow for themselves. The neighbors down hill watched as the livestock died.

Water is no longer safe, the run off of pesticides and what ever makes it dangerous  to drink from any stream.

Outside the house any water has to be boiled an a few drops of Clorox In side the home any odd  smell needs to get the water department out to check.

Back in the late 70's I was thirsty at O'Hara and the water coming out of a public water fountain was YELLOW.

The reason I have 3 water filters. Two MSR waterworks and a Katadyn hiker.

That's what Sacramento is doing to the farmers now.  Seems like only big Ag is getting it.

In California and other places on the left coast, endangered fish are getting the water, and all farms are getting screwed.

I've got my eye on a Katadyn (sp?) Gravidyn and the filters, even though the thing is rated for 39,000 gallons.

I'm kinda lucky in that I live in a part of the world where you really don't have to worry too much about industrial type contamination.

Natural water sources may have stuff some organic solids and crawlies getting about in there but they're easy enough to negate or remove.

My "bug out" locations have permanent natural water that is safe directly out of the source , and I have a 1000 litre rainwater tank at home (in addition to the 50 or so litres of bottled tap water I have for an ice buffer in my freezers).

Something that I'd like to develop though is a continuous column distillation rig intended for desalinating estuary and ocean water. Something that operates on the camp-fire and can be disassembled to fit into the storage boxes on the back of my pickup with all the other crap important stuff I take out.

I'm curious about the "rainwater tank". Is this something that is always filled ?

Well I only use it for home brew normally so it stays pretty close to full most of the time. Got some rain the other day and I was watching water pour out the overflow pipe.

I cycle out water at the end of each dry season to keep it from getting overly stagnant.

Typically it only gets used for washing / drinking in case of a natural disaster where our water gets cut off. This has only happened a couple of times since I had the tank installed and was caused by a flood blocking the municipal water supply intake for a few days. This was the result of a cyclone (hurricane) and there was *plenty* of rain falling to keep the tank full at the time.

Yes.

Hold at a rolling boil for 5 minutes then stand uncovered until cool.

I have two of the backpacker survival straws. Look just like tubes with charcoal filters.
I have a professional water filter for camping/backpacking with three filters. Nice and compact with real filters.

BUT I also purchased a water pasteurizer for my Stovetec set. this is what I now possess:

The stove

The super pot

The water pasteurizer
http://www.zentg.com/stovetec/stovetec-stainless-steel-water-pasteurizer/dp/3
Quote
Water pasteurization is a heat process used to kill harmful bacteria and make water safe to drink for human consumption. Heating water to 65º C (149º F) will kill all germs, viruses, and parasites. Pasteurization can be accomplished without having to bring the water to a boil. Paired with a StoveTec Rocket Stove, approximately 4 liters of water can be brought up to 65°C (149º F), the temperature required to pasteurize water in mere minutes. There is no water filtration system included with this product. Heavy metal contamination or toxins are not affected by pasteurization. Pasteurization will not help if water is brackish or chemically contaminated.
Looks like a need a more permanent filtration device.

The Gravidyn came last week.  It's rahter small, considering what I was expecting.

I also ordered three of these, at this link:

http://www.campingsurvival.com/lifestraw.html

Free shipping.  I figure that if we're out somewhere and don't have access to the Gravidyn, this will at least give us enough water to get back.

Picked this up a few weeks ago for $60! Now the price is up? Demand? This is nice as the waterworks filters I have are a lot of work.

Cats, I see that those are rated for 1500 liters.  The LifeStraw I posted above is rated for 1000 liters, and you can get 3 of them for $60 (free shipping for now).

No, I haven't.  I've got three of 'em next to me, though.

The thing is, they are small and transportable--and inexpensive.

The older I get the more I lean towards comfort. I have spent weeks in the wilderness of Alaska and the Dacks with the waterworks pumps. The reason I went for the Platypus.

Just fyi, water in the farmed Midwest cannot be made drinkable with bleach/boiling due to nitrates. It must be distilled. Have seen horses and cattle just keel over dead from nitrates in their feed.
