Mushrooms in chili

A couple of years ago I attended a Super Bowl party at which the host served chili with mushrooms in it. The chili was the basic tomato juice-based type with ground beef and kidney beans, and the mushrooms were canned morels - nothing exotic about them. Mind you, I am not a 'foodie,' and it didn't turn my stomach or anything, but there's just something about mushrooms in chili that seems...wrong.

I'm interested in hearing thoughts from others about a dish that, to me, seems like an epic mismatch where ingredients are concerned.

Nope, nope, nope.

franksolich is generally accepting of most things, but when it comes to chili, no onions, no peppers, no tomatoes (tomato sauce and tomato paste is okay though), no dead fish, no mushrooms.

1. dh loves mushrooms, is lukewarm about chili, but when i suggested mushrooms in the chili, his hair caught on fire.

it does seem odd to me, but i might do it if i had some mushrooms that needed to get used. except for afore mentioned dh.

2. I have never had them in chili

Trust me, you don't want them either.

3. Yeah, that's an epic mismatch.

Doesn't seem appetizing at all.

Uh huh.  It's about as appetizing as putting raw tomatoes, peppers, onions, or dead fish in it.

6. It was edible

but, then again, I'm like Mikey from the old Life cereal commercial; I eat everything.

<<<not like Mikey.

4. you might could come up with a chil-like thing with portobellos but just putting mushrooms in chili is wrong, imho. But I like tofu in chili playing the role of the beans, and I like chili made out of crawfish and shrimp, so I'm probably not qualified to make a comment.

5. I like tofu in chili and the crustaceans sound tasty as well, although I may be imagining something more akin to gumbo than chili.

Tofu?

Yuk....I love mushrooms, but in chili just does not sound right.

I'm good with the onions and peppers though.  :-)

This is one of the few times I've been in agreement with coach on a food topic.

I do use diced tomatoes, but they cook down to almost nothing.

I'm a little surprised, though, that there's no mention of topping the bowl of chili with a pint of sour cream.

Ok... I think, and have been told, I make some darn good Chili.

I use:

Bell Peppers
Onions
Diced toms
Crushed Toms
Tomato sauce
Beef
3 different types of beans
Seasonings.

But mushrooms?  No...

That sounds awful.

I hate mushrooms as much as franksolich dislikes onions.

I love mushrooms and cook with them a lot. I'm also pretty chilled about going slightly off-piste with ingredients...but mushrooms in chilli? That's just an abomination against nature and all that's good in the world.

I prefer mushrooms on pizza, but never chili.

Veggies belong in chili too. Its ok to have onions, beans, peppers, and beans.

I love mushrooms.

I also love olives and artichoke hearts.

None of them belong in chili.

Maybe dummie is confusing spaghetti sauce and chili.

Mushrooms go in spaghetti sauce. Not chili.

Beans do not go in chili. or anything else for that matter.....

If I was a guest in someone's home, minding my manners, and they had made the unfortunate mistake of putting mushrooms in chili, I suppose I could choke it down.  But tofu?  No way in hell.  Watch the DUmmies put peas in the chili next.

North Carolina I had chili with corn added.  Now this was in a  place off the tar road and people came from miles around to eat that Chili.   What ever was in season went into the pot, didn't matter what came from the fields in it went. [ did I mention this was a well known Biker Bar ] ?

Good hardy eaten, WTF these people were not from Texas and just wanted to fill up their belly as they had another 200 miles to go, in all weather, it was the spices that kept them stopping in on a round trip.

One can make Chili out of anything, any kind of meat and throw in darn near anything as long as there is the chili spices.  Texas chili is of one kind but the rest of the nation has taken the original Texas chili and thrown in  what is available to them,  as long as you have the spices, even adding carrots and radishes, it is CHILI.
