Could I ask for some opinions on a certain issue here?
« on: January 10, 2013, 08:29:19 AM »
On a different site, I liked to post in the religious forum.  When I gave my opinions and beliefs, I always made sure to insert that "this is what I believed and it was only for thought.  Even though I did this, there were a couple of people who were constantly stalking everything I wrote and flaming me.  They actually yelled a couple times in caps calling me a "false prophet" and all kinds of nonsense.

So, I asked them to provide the scripture that supported what they believed as opposed to what I believed and they simply wouldn't do that....  Time and time again when they accused me of thinking I was "holier than thou"...I asked them again to provide scripture to support what it was that they believed so we could discuss it intelligently...to no avail...they just kept flaming me.

Well, what happened was that I became so frustrated at one point...I just told them to F-off...LOL  I know that wasn't the right thing to do but these two people were constantly doing this...I just had enough at that point.

So, I'm asking for some opinions about people who do these kinds of things and what you would do or how you feel about these kinds of people.

Thanks in advance, Terry

Caveat: I'm a conservative, pro-life atheist. Having said that......

......those two people are showing closed minds. Forget about trying to argue or even discuss religion with them. Put them on IGNORE.

"True believers" come in all stripes and colors. They can be Madeline Murray O'Hair or Michael Newdow Atheists (not atheists), They can be evangelicals who think Mormonism is a cult. They can be Protestants who sneer at Catholics, or any religious group who believe that THEIR way is the only way.

My formula is to keep an open mind, but not so open that the wind blows through.

I think that's good advice.  I'm at the point now though of not discussing religion at all anymore.  I've been so discouraged and hurt by some of the responses that no matter how nice or open you try to be...some people who disagree will inevitably try to make life miserable for you.

Since so many Christian denominations read from so many different Bibles...it's a hard topic to tackle these days and to no good end it seems.

I've usually always read from the KJV, Septuagint and others along that line, but from now on...until I've had three dreams and vision...mum's the word from me...LOL

Thanks for the reply marv...

I was raised in the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. Over 55 years ago, when I was 17, I began to seriously question the existence of a deity. But that's neither here nor there. However, if I were to go back to a religious affiliation today, it would probably be Roman Catholic.

I take it that you are probably Greek Orthodox. Hold on to your faith and let no one dissuade you of what you truly believe. We all, myself included, need to have faith and recieve moral sustenance in something beyond ourselves.

I'm not a Greek Orthodox or really even associated with any denomination. My husband and I used to attend a Baptist church, but then stopped.  Over the years, I've simply tried to live by the Gospel of Jesus Christ as best I've been blessed to understand it as it is.  I have my faith, belief and trust in the Lord...that's good enough for me for now.

I respect and understand that everyone must live by their own convictions, whatever those may be.  I've never attempted to shove my beliefs down anyone's throat, I know I wouldn't like someone doing that to me either.  I guess this is why I've always tried to encourage people to use scripture to confirm their beliefs so we can compare and discuss the differences intelligently.  That didn't work out so well either because they didn't want to use scripture to confirm their beliefs...only their feelings and opinions on it.

It's a delicate subject these days amongst the varied denominations and I've always agreed that even interpretations weren't that important as long as one believed and had faith in the Lord.

Well...thank you so much for your input, I appreciate it.

I had a gun shoved in my back during an armed robbery when I was sixteen. I've been shot at, and I killed a kid in Laos after he tried to kill me, but I would still call 911 - afterwards. I ain't gonna haul a body out by myself!

Like you, Teri, I am not any real denomination. I was christened in the Church of England, went to a Catholic church(hell and brimstone). I beleieve in God and Jesus, though not a big church goer. I think God made man of different races, ethnic backgrounds, and different belief systems, to see if man would get along with others despite many differences. I think we have failed miserably...

Yes, and the reason I believe we've failed is because the church of four walls has failed.  The only cure for prejudice is becoming one in the body of Christ.  I find very few churches today that actually teach the true gospel of Jesus Christ.  Many of them have become part of the corrupt politically correct system that's bought into liberal social trends and agenda's.  They've sold out to the world instead being a witness against it.

Since I left the farm and moved to liberal Massachusetts...I'd almost forgot what it feels like to live like a real dirt farmin patriot with a sawed off pistol grip shotgun.  The closest I ever came to shootin someone was when I caught a couple varmints tryin to steal my ATV four wheeler behind my house.  I ran outside and shot in the air and all I saw was two shinny asses runnin for the briar patch.

I believe that there are still some small churches that teach the true Gospel, but the larger one's have become part of the politically correct corrupt system.  Many churches have given homosexuals their own sects instead of preaching the truth to them...they've chosen to ignore the problem and place their stamp of approval on the lifestyle because of the discrimination laws.  This is truly sad, but it's happening more and more and nothing is going to stop it now.

Christianity has been under attack since the liberal social agendas gained acceptance and steam over the decades.  It's now considered hateful and a crime to preach the truth of Gods word.  Many of these churches in order to stay alive have succumbed to these laws in order to keep their doors open for fear if they preach the wrong message they will be sued or worse.

This is why we can't find a good church here in Massachusetts...it's mostly liberal and they all seemed to have squelched and silenced themselves in fear today.

So happy that you have found a nice church to go to.  As for myself...I read my Bible and keep praying in faith for a better day to come.

I can not tell you how good it is to get back to where I came from, especially after living a good part of my life, the 2nd half of my career, wearing a suit and tie for too many years.

I think part of our problem is that too many folks have lost the ability to be in touch with the world they live in.  They live in phony bubbles, full of Starbucks and hang out at a country club.  Not going to say I did not fall into that trap, I did, but I can say life was hollow, the folks I met were not friends just people I knew from some country club or other executives at work who could add water to the radiator in his own car.

I grew up throwing 3500 bale of hay UP in the barn, shoveling horse manure and digging fend post holes.  Never do horses again, too much work for too little reward, but it sure is good to get back on a tractor, burn a tank or two in a chainsaw and do some real work for me and my family and my piece of America...I don't care who you are, Chinaman, Rusky or the EPA or some other Federal Agency that thinks they have a say over my piece of America.  I will tell them straight up, if you think you are all powerful, why don't just try telling my coon dog, Buddy, to not chase squirrels and while you are at it, you better stay on that side of my fence, you are not welcome here and "THIS I WILL DEFEND"...

Here, just see if ole Buddy the coon dog will jump when you say too:

Oh man, I do miss the farm and my horses and you're right...the horses were *a lot of work*.  I had hired hands to help, but I won't forget the days of loading hay into the barns in 120 degree heat and lifting those 75 lb bales either, but I loved my horses and it was hard when I had to leave the farm, but I had about worn myself out trying to maintain two farms, a business with about thirty employees with little help.

I was actually relieved when I moved to the burbs able to flush my terlit without havin to worry about where it crap was going to go or a well that might run dry as it did in the past.

Livin on the farm was nice, but it was a lot of work, especially in the winter when the pipes busted and I had to hand haul buckets of water to my horses who sucked up a five gallon bucket in seconds...  And the snow...having to plow myself out in the winter...  Even still...there's nothing like looking out of the window in the morning and seeing nothing but pasture and horses.

I had to give up a lot to change my life too, but it was all worth it in the end.  I've got a much happier life with a guy who's made me happier than I'd ever been.  Money isn't everything although one still needs it to survive.

Looks like you've got a wonderful place there Oaks.  It was a lot of fun riding those four wheelers I had on the farm too.  I only had 60 acres, but that was big enough for me.  Most of my neighbors back then had hundreds of acres, so my place was small compared to theirs.

Here's some free advice.  Stop hanging around liberals.  They are teaching you filthy language and if you're going to pretend to do the Christian walk, clean up your talk.

You say one thing then do another.  Real conservative people don't contradict their behavior.

I still can't believe all that nasty stuff you wrote. You should hang your head in shame sista.

Teri I do understand.

Worse yet are the folks that physically back you into a corner on line no problem but when running into zealots in person, this can scare the pants off someone.

First time was when the kids were small and we moved into a new home. Knock came on the door about the time I was putting the kids to bed.   Pastor came, a Methodist I believe and I still wonder if he had been drinking.   He told us we were invited to services, OK but when the kids all piled into the room to see who had come to call, this Pastor of a church with 300 members turned to the kids and told them that if I or their father died and we had all not been saved we would all go to Hell.  Kids father and I were speechless, so bad we had no idea what to do or say.   I have no idea how we got this Pastor out the door but two days later we enrolled the kids in a Catholic school.

Flash to 30 years later, I had had a OSHA accident at work.  The woman in charge of my case came into the doctors office while I was getting dressed and noticed my tattoo.   This woman who could have held up my claim approached me and told me she wandered about the meaning of my tat.   I told her it was a symbol of my faith and out of the blue she asked if I had been saved in Jesus, she became quite strident and then began to call me by my full name.   I recognised this as a method to call off evil people by calling the Evil by their full name.   Darn it gave me the creeps, this woman turned her back to me and finished paper work refusing to look at me.   Damn she was a nut case.

Worse next was at a family wedding the brides father approached me and with a friendly look asked me if I had been saved.  I took the bull by the horns and asked why he wanted to know.   Here I was at the wedding of a family member and the brides father had me in a corner.   Mother came to my rescue, she got between us and he made the mistake of asking a old lady if she had been saved.   She told him that with all respect it was none of his business. He got all huffy and went off to fight the good fight with others he did not know.

At no time in my life have I had a NUN or Priest ask me that question or even ask me what my faith is, or not except me be I a Budest or any faith.  Same as a Jewish Temple, I would escort some elderly to services and at no time was I questioned , just welcomed.

BTW, on high Holy days in the Jewish Temples were my favorite times, the ancient ceremony's those the Jesus went to in his time, unforgettable. A gate way into the past as Jesus knew, WOW.
