looking for an appropriate Biblical phrase
« on: December 04, 2012, 08:28:22 AM »
I'm working on an award for a primitive I'm pretty sure is going to end up in the Top Ten.  The principal characteristic of this primitive is his utter lack of gratitude.

I want to use a Biblical phrase that describes the fate, in this world, not the next One, of those who aren't ever grateful for all they've been given, even if they've been given only a little bit.

Help.....please.  And many thanks in advance.

". . . they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools. . ." Romans 1:21-22 (ESV). "Futile fools"? See the whole section, Romans 1:18-32, which describes the DUmmies pretty well.

(Not that the rest of us, even all "decent and civilized people," are exempt from being sinners deserving judgment also. See the whole of Romans 1:18-3:20. "None is righteous, no, not one.")

I also think of the Parable of the Rich Fool (Luke 12:13-21), who did not acknowledge God as the source of his blessings. "Thou fool!"

Proverbs 15:14 The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness. (KJV)

Proverbs 15:16 When a fool is annoyed, he quickly lets it be known. Smart people will ignore an insult. (GNT)

Proverbs 12:15 Stupid people always think they are right. Wise people listen to advice. (GNT)

I prefer KJV but GNT is funny.

Romans 1:18-32

Quote
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

^^^from the King James version, the version I generally prefer over "modern" ones.

Proverbs 15:14:

Quote
14 The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.

Proverbs 15:16:

Quote
16 Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith.

^^^now, I can understand and appreciate this, but it's unlikely a primitive could.

Proverbs 12:15:

Quote
15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

Now, it's very possible this is what I might use, although I haven't rejected any of those suggested.  I have time after all to decide:

Quote
The way of a foole is right in his owne eyes: but he that hearkeneth vnto counsell, is wise.

I don't know about anybody else, but the 1611 King James Version to me is the very best of all versions, but I could be biased, because of my familiarity with it, it having been used in speech therapy oh so many years ago.

Everybody's different, but I just can't see where any version tops the original one when it comes to clear straightforward blunt language.  It's great.

From the unabbreviated version of the JohnnyReb bible......

"Lo the poor, lazy and stupid are always with you."
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

Well, frank, I hate to pick nits about this, but there has been so much more scholarly research since the KJV.

Scholars have found a myriad of errors in the syntax of the translation. After all, this was translated for a man who persecuted all non-Catholics.

Too many versions now are "dumbed down" or paraphrase versions. The version the branch of the Lutheran Church I belong to uses the English Standard Version. I'm not saying it's better or worse than others, but out of the 4 or 5 translations I have here at the house, it's my favorite. And, we have a KJV and a NKJV.

KJV comes closest to the original translators of the bible than the current movement of evangelical bibles.

If you want it right, go to KJV the original.

Inerrancy and the NIV

They changed the meaning of the bible

The reason that people prefer KJV over some other versions of the Bible is context of a the scripture. Like when Jesus says "I am THE way" some versions may say "I am a way." they're changing the meaning. Obviously it is changing the meaning. The best bible to get is an Interlinear Bible. You can read word for word the English under Old Testament Hebrew and New Testament Greek. It may not make much sense because KJV adds word in italics but the original translations show what the true meaning are.

A good example is that most Bible omit Acts 8:37 "And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." KJV

Some Bibles put that in footnotes because of some texts don't have it and its only seen in later texts.

We use the NASB because it's translated at the college reading level instead of the 8th grade level.  This allows for better accuracy in the choice of English words and more careful translation...at least for those that understand "all those college words."

I bought NKJV for my kids...

Oh now.

The 1611 version is great.

Quote
1. Though I speake with the tongues of men & of Angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brasse or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophesie, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge: and though I have all faith, so that I could remoove mountaines, and have no charitie, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestowe all my goods to feede the poore, and though I give my body to bee burned, and have not charitie, it profiteth me nothing.

At least for speech therapy, it's great.
