If that isn't an inducement to get one after this, I don't know what would get through his skull.  I want to get one for the townhouse ASAP; a big natural gas-powered one, but the thing would likely have to go on the front of the house by the garage.  I am damned sure going to find out.

Fingers crossed, my Cousin is coming up to visit us tomorrow from Brooklyn, he's going to stop at a Staten Island Home Depot, there's 1 that I was looking at that showed limited stock in the Staten Island store, but I'll be shocked if it's in stock.

I had no options available living in that apartment.  Good thing I kept a spare car battery and work lamp hanging around... it was nice to have light when the power went out, which it did regularly in that neighborhood.

We're looking at something called a Power Inverter, we're hoping we can find a 1200W, at least we can run the sump pump on that:

Dearest BallyGirl, I wish you safety and good will.... I think by the time it gets here in NH, Sandy will have gone out to sea or tuckered herself out!! Keep me posted!!

I'll charge up my phone, at least I'll be able to get internet that way if we lose power.

Looks like a giant battery/UPS.

You hook it up to the car battery, in 1 of the reviews my husband read, the guy said he was able to run his sump pump for 2 days off of it, and we have a battery charger in the garage, so if we can't get a generator this might be the way to go.

Ah, okay.  The inverter part makes sense now.

It maybe nothing but I have an older brother that is living now in Delaware and his wife is with him. Not sure how much it will affect him since I don;t know where in the state he is and what they are doing. He;ll probably call this weekend to fill us in .Just hope he is there in case it gets bad. He flies for an airline and I'd hate for his wife to have to ride it out with the kids.

...and what are you going to plug the charger in to??????

If you're carring the battery down to the basement and then bringing it back up when it needs charging, just hook it to your car battery with jumper cables....run the car a few minutes and it'll be recharged. ****NOW LISTEN*****when hooking the battery for recharging be careful. Clip the +(positive) post to the + post on dead battery, then the -(negative) post on dead battery and the other end of that cable you hook to some metal part of the car ***AWAY****from the car battery....and when disconnecting, remove the end of the cable hooked to some part of the car first. You don't want the battery exploding in your face.

In the manner of the 'official' debate threads and the upcoming Election Night thread, I figure that I'd start one of these in this forum, for Hurricane/TS Sandy.  The Weather Channel is saying that the European model is sending the eye into the DelMarVa peninsula, which would put the maximum winds there up to NYC, and the storm surge into New York Harbor.  The GFS model, the US one, is saying that the eye (and the wind) is going to come into NYC, so the storm surge will hit Long Island and Providence RI.  The entire states of PA, NY, NJ, VT, CO, and RI are 'likely' to lose power.

Hang on, gang, it's going to be 'interesting.'

Thinking of Sparkey and his family.    Good grief what a interesting few weeks for all of them.  First Grandma, now this storm, add in the fact that Sparkey works nights, crap my prayers are up for all in the family.

Decisions, decisions, should we stay or should we go ?????  What to do about MY mother.  She lives on the river and I do not want to see history repeat as it did with her Grandmother.  Late 1950's I believe it was Carol that came in and the poor woman had to ride the storm out alone on the river front, I do believe the lot lost 7-8 big trees.  Not good to be alone at a time of a Hurricane, especially when in your late 70's   Now Mom is much older at 90 years of age.

We could take the Pup and go ride it out with her, have to leave the cats with food and water and the birds here.

Then I could try  to pry her hands off a few bucks and she could get a room at a hotel with a generator and a large well stocked kitchen. Heck I will pay for the room myself if need be.

I can handle a tornado much easier, they come without warning knock down everything and go away,  Sort of like a horrid car crash, everyone in shock and dazed at first but it is over and done with for good or bad.

It is the impending doom that rattles the nerves, The hours of waiting for a monster to bite your Ass and keep wondering if this is a false alarm or if not what more do I need to prepare for.

Gloria hit in the mid 1980's we living in Tidewater area of VA were blasted every 30 minutes with loud speakers on top of police cars telling us to evacuate now.    We did, drove 100 miles and got a room.  Next day we returned home to find all was well at the apartment complex  and the neighbors with hair raising story's of what went on in the city shelters.

What to do, what to do ??????????

It would be helpful to have some sort of schedule.

Like, when's it expected to hit Maryland?  Or Connecticut?

Today?  Tomorrow?  Next week?  Next month?

I've been following news reports, and it seems like it's a long time away yet, but that impression could be wrong.

Sunday into Monday is when it's supposed to start getting bad. The track has pulled more northward, so it may not be as bad. It was supposed to come up the Chesapeake Bay corridor; that would not have been fun at all. Because it's supposed to act like a nor'easter, it's going to hang around for a few days. With the full moon, that means bad flooding on the coasts.

It doesn't matter because all the auto parts stores are out of them :banghead:. This feels like the Presidential election and all hopes are on Ohio, well in our case all hopes are on Staten Island, they're expecting a shipment so I'm hoping my Cousin gets there and the shipment has already come in.

                        :bawl:

So far, called Mother to inform her she would have 3 visitors for a few days.  ---- Not a happy mother to say the least when we told her we were bringing the Pup.

Hubby went out to Home Depot and talk about price gouging, last years kerosene heaters at $80.00 now on sale for $200.00.  Yikes, but what can one do.   It may come in handy later on in the winter.    23,000 BTU's so should keep the place warm at least to 65 degrees for some time.

Tomorrow off to Walmart for a campers stove that uses small propane bottles, easy way to cook up hot water for tea, coffee or hot soup. Needs no ventilation------- :hyper:  The house is over 200 years old and I fear we may get more ventilation then needed anyway.

Water in jugs to place in the freezer, Poor Hubby is not happy about all the extra expense BUT if not needed it may come in handy at another time.

So this may become a non event, but everything we buy can be used down the road in case of ice storm or blizzard.  Never know we can go for many years without a disaster hitting us and we all get laid back as we nudnicks believe there is no reason to prepare to the hilt.

There was a storm in the early 1970's that came into the Boston area, people were freezing to death in their cars, cars ran off the roads and the snow plows covered them up. No one knew the cars were there until the snow melted.   Mom sent me the newspaper clippings to read on a beach in Hawaii, dad noted in the margins, for me to allways buy a bright yellow car as they are the easiest to see in any damaged area.

Starting to get a bit Antsy now.   But this is a survival method in some ways, depending on the damage and the after math I am considering bring along some hand guns to protect against the looters.

Katrina was Bushes fault, so Sandy may become Obamas fault  if he handles this like he does the Middle East.

Well I'm stuck over here not all that far from the resident pro life convict sympathizer and I tell you it's every man for himself over here. Ok not really...people seem to e having your average cool overcast fall day of shopping and football here. Only stocking up going on here is the minor kind as we prepare for potentially a few inches of snow and some downed small branches. For us it's like a little preview of our average winter weather. I don't know that it's been cool enough long enough for much of it to stick. Our forecast here in oh is why the resident du convict lovers run for the hills out of Dayton post so cracked me up? Really?

I've got family on the east coast and friends including those here. I will be thinking of you all. Please let us know you are ok.

Since the storm still seems pretty southern at the moment, I'm not too worried for our colleagues in the northeast.

However, I'm guessing my good friend JohnnyReb in South Carolina is being doused right now, and I hope to God he's prepared.

I think we should have a "mandatory check-in" at this thread for all those members in the area of the storm; they'd have to post here before they can post anywhere else on conservativecave, so that we know all's okay.

According to the weather channel the worst of the rain will be on the west side so that means Chesapeake still gets pounded. My weather radio just warned about flooding starting Sunday into Tuesday for my area.

Thankfully, when our house was built I picked a location 100 feet above sea level and near the top of a hill. The real estate agent said I was the first person she saw do such a thing. Unfortunately we could still be at risk for ground water flooding in the basement. Darn, still didn't buy that flood insurance.  :argh:

I've already chewed the fingernails down to the knuckles worrying about JohnnyReb.

I don't think that we'll be in much trouble here--the storm looks more and more as if it will track across the south of PA.  Ballygrl, OTOH, and others in the Mid-Atlantic region, I'm a tad worried about.

As long as I don't try to repeat what I attempted to do last year during Irene, I'll be alright.

(That Sunday morning, I said to my wife, "I'm goning out to see what I can see."  Her reaction--"Are you effin' crazy???  There's a local State of Emergency--they want everyone off the roads.  I will do what I can to keep you here."  Knowing that she does know how to load and fire the various weapons I have, I decided to take it easy for the day.)
