Official Sandy thread
« on: October 25, 2012, 10:53:55 AM »
Watching this so called major monster storm headed our way.

As we know the the meteorologists can be way off or dead on when predicting these things.      Bothered me when the meteorologists get all upset and give out worse case scenarios.        They may be right and not enough of us take notice.

Drives me nuts when a big storm is predicted to watch what people are buying for food, Carts of perishable food in 2-3 days of non refrigeration.     Heck why not buy canned meat, crackers, peanut butter and good old cans of baked beans that can be eaten cold ????

Have to expect electricity to go out, even with propane one needs electricity to ignite the burners.

Any one know where the shelters are that will take pets ?????   Nuts, who thinks of that big tree in the yard that may come down on top of a car, ever thought to move the car to an area that is safer ????

So I am a nut, I will if this looks worse then tie my Kayaks to the back deck in case of flooding,   just jump in and bring my puppy and ride the tide.  Hubby will have to handle the Coon cats.

We do not get this much excitement very often, kind of opens our eyes to what if.

Brings life into prospective of what is really valuable in life, what we put our priority's on, be it life or possessions.

I'm supposed to be out in the field that day, looking at five National Grid substations.  Guess I'm going to call back and say, "Later in the week."

Sandy's not invited to my housewarming party, BTW. :hammer:

Hope we don't get a repeat of Irene! She was bad to my area. Anyway I filled all gas cans, vehicles and propane tanks this morn. Always ready.

Hmmm. Temps here in northern Missouri have dropped about 30 degrees since mid-morning.

And it's quite shitty outside.

From what I saw Crystal Egger and Kelly Bonehead Cass say about an hour ago on The Weather Channel, it quite possibly will be worse.  Ya see, Irene made landfall and went northeast.  Sandy is supposedly going to hit right around Atlantic City and go northwest.  The northeast part of the storm gets the most rain.  Guess where the Catskills would be in relation to wherethe storm's going to hit?  Northeast.  Last time, they were north-northwest and look at what happened.  The one possible saving grace is that the storm will have to travel longer over land to get to the Catskills, so there should be a bit less energy.

But, for those in the Schoharie Creek area downstream of the Gilboa Dam, the lake behind the dam was waaaay down a couple of months ago, and they told us then that they could take an inflow of the same size as they suffered for Irene (over 4 billion gallons!) and not overtop the Gilboa Dam (Irene was eight feet over the top of Gilboa Dam for Irene).  So, they should be better off.

Vesta are you stocked up? Do you have extra puppy chow and Friskies? Don't forget the little ones.
Batteries for when the power goes out, maybe a portable heater?

Prepping for storms like this is probably just a part of life in New England. Cats and dogs are easy to forget in the rush.

Just 60-80? I thought it was a hurricane.  :fuelfire:

Get a generator or don't open the freezer unless you absolutely have to. I don't know how long you'll be out of power. You may lose it.

If you don't get a generator, get dry goods that don't need refrigeration (or cooking) to eat.

I'm looking at Generators now and not happy if I have to put out a minimum $400. We had no problem with the storm last year, everyone around us was out but for some reason we had power, we had people come stay with us for a few days.

Are you on the same electric provider as your neighbors?

We're with a co-op, and were out of power for about 18-24 hours after Hurricane Dolly, while everyone else was out 5-6 days.
