Opinion please
« on: October 02, 2012, 02:00:50 PM »
I painted the first coat in the half bath today. I had planned on painting the ceiling white in both the bathroom and hallway. We are putting waincoting (shaker style) in the hallway and bathroom. The bathroom already has crown molding and my husband is going to put it up in the hallway.

I painted the first coat in the hallway, don't pay attention to the shitty job, I'm going to do a second coat. The difference between the original paint and the new paint color is two shades darker on the color sample card. They painted both the walls and the ceiling the same color, I'm sure because it was cheaper.

If I leave the ceiling color as is you will see the crown molding more but to me ceilings should be white. What are your opinions?

Unless you think the hallway is to dark I would leave the ceiling as is.  Like you stated painting the ceiling white will tend to make the crown molding disappear negating it's effect.

Myself I'm no fan of White crown molding. To me a stained natural wood color is more appealing to the eye.

I agree, paint the walls whatever color you want but the ceiling must be white.

And for the record, if you do crown molding don't paint the walls in a color that will cause the molding to be lost.

Crown molding is like bling and should stand out, if it does not then it's not worth putting up.

Edit: Zues pointed out the white crown molding, ya he's right, the white ceiling will wash that out.

I guess you are stuck with an off white for the ceiling, the bling thing still stands, why else would one put up crown molding?

In our place, we went with the same color pallet, but the ceilings done in one of the lighter shades. It's very close to what you have, if you compare the wall pic to the ceiling pic. Same kind of contrast. Keeps it from looking like a cave.

We had natural black walnut molding in our house in CA, it was so dark at times I wanted to paint it white. I almost did in my bedroom.

All of our molding is white, I'm not about to start changing out all of our molding. After the stairs and all of the added wainscoting (and changing the trim around quite a few doors) my husband would divorce me. I like white molding. The simpler the better, I'm not an ornate person.

Like this...

Now I'm wondering if I should get a quart of a lighter shade of the blue and paint the ceiling in the bathroom...hmmmm.

Here is an example of the walls and ceiling being the same color and the crown molding painted the trim color in our house. This is the color the rest of the house is (except or my daughters room which I painted green).

I favor white ceilings, but can see the point others have made about the crown molding being "lost."  Still, would even a lighter shade of the current color satisfy both?

I agree with the keeping the ceiling the lighter shade.

I think that a darker ceiling makes a more depressing room. Lighter ceilings give a room a warmer glow.

My opinion only.

Maybe you could go with a band of the same color as the walls and as wide as the molding around the the ceiling and paint the rest an off white. Possibly create the illusion of a raised ceiling, with the right lighting.  :???:

I like a contrasting ceiling.  For example, in my red room I painted the ceiling yellow/gold.

My rule on matching ceilings is to keep them about three shades lighter than the walls.

I agree with a couple lighter shades of the wall color on the ceiling which I believe would maintain a contrast with the molding.
