Not living near the coast...
« on: October 01, 2012, 04:37:28 PM »
sucks. Why, you ask? I took the family on a weekend trip to the Monterey Bay area this weekend. On the way back we stopped at several road side veggie stands in the Castroville area:

White corn: 7 ears for a dollar. Yellow was 10 ears for a buck.

Small Artichokes: a dozen for a dollar. Here is what we do with them: http://freshcatering.blogspot.com/2005/11/fried-baby-artichokes-with-lemons.html

We bought 2 doz.

Brussel Sprouts ( :bird: if you don't like them  )  $3.99 for a 2 ft long stem, at home, that's a 1 lb price. The stem weighs around 5 lb.  :o

Cantaloupes and Honeydew melons the size of small watermelons................you guessed it.........one dollar.

Everything was being unloaded from the trucks and being trimmed as we shopped. It was about as fresh as you can get. Incredible.

Here at home you pay triple (or more) the prices!

At least you get lower prices than out here in the Midwest.  The produce prices were somewhat shocking the first time I went shopping in Omaha compared to California.  Gilroy tends to have a number of stands with good prices.

C R, yuck. One thing I notice, and I wish we had seen, no asparagus. It's rare I can find it under $3.99 a bunch. Probably the wrong time of year, would be my guess.

I think that Asparagus is an early spring vegetable, so you are probably right.
