Facebook meme: 'If you can afford beer...you don't need food stamps or welfare'

Last edited Sun Sep 2, 2012, 09:41 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)

It's from a Facebook conservative page "100 percent FED up" whose mission is: "We will not fall victim to the liberal message of the main stream media, Hollywood and its subversive messaging, divisive liberal activists and politicians. They have an agenda...and it doesn't include Life, Liberty or the Pursuit of your Happiness!" Friend just shared this graphic.

What would be a rational response to this nonsense, besides "So you're just going to let them starve to death?"

Well DUmmies what part of that is untrue?

If you can afford all those things then why should we pay your grocery bill?
You don't need Beer, drugs, cigarettes, manicures and tattoos to survive.

Got it.

Then manage your money so you can have a moment of pleasure, don't come and demand that we buy your groceries.

8. I would agree with most of it, but point out that

most people receiving assistance are not living high on the hog as this quote implies.

This is essentially Reagan's "Welfare Cadillac" crap all over again.

I would ask him to provide data to support his contention that this is typical of those receiving assistance.

I don't have data, but have seen many people using the EBT card while yacking away on their I Phone.

at least not in NC.

And why should only the wealthy and well-off have luxuries? Poor people should be allowed to have some fun, too.

They get the money somewhere, the whole point is, if they have the cash for that stuff that could be used to buy food. You know they could be responsible.
I'm sorry I have no sympathy if you are yacking away on your I Phone while buying beer, cigarettes and lotto tickets then complain you can't afford food. At some point you have to responsible for your self.

I would let them have all the nourishment that beer, drugs, tobacco, and tattoos would provide.

As recently as last year I saw an ATM in a nail salon with a sign saying "EBT Cards Accepted"

I don't mind my tax money going to feed people going through a short term crisis, I do object it being used to feed people who make poor financial decisions.  I have to make tough decisions on where to spend my money, and will likely have to continue to live on a budget for a fair number of years in the future to pay off school loans and get some money saved up, why should others be rewarded for a lack of responsibility.

Smoking could easily cost a person several thousand dollars per year.  Why should I pay for somebody's food bill if they are choosing to spend their money on cigarettes?

Yes.

If they get hungry enough, they'll decide to spend some of their money on food.

I have met very few if any adult Americans that couldn't afford to skip a meal or two.

Whoever said that money can't buy happiness clearly needed instruction in gluttony and hedonism.

The "poor" in this country have X Box's cell phones cars and internet.

Exactly what "moment of pleasure" are we denying them?

At over 5 bucks a pack for branded cigs, and at least 4 bucks a six pack, going by my consumption as a young guy, that would equate to 1 pack per day ($150) per month and at least a case of beer per week ($64) per month for a average of over $200 per month.  Now, $200 bucks can buy a fair amount of groceries.  Not going to be eating steak and cappers, but you can eat OK.

Better yet, why not use that 200 windfall to get back and forth to the trade school and learn how to weld or do HVAC, plumbing or electrical.  I can never get a contractor to come to do a job in a timely manner, seems they are always too busy

And after paying for finish carpenters and plumbers, they seem to make a pretty good wage.
You see, I don't care you how feel.  I really don't.  More importantly, neither does anyone else.  Only about 200 people on a planet of 7 billion actually care about your feelings, and that's if you're lucky.  The sooner you grasp this lesson, the better off you will be.  And since almost no one gives a damn what you do, say, think, or feel, appealing to your feelings when you encounter differences of opinion is not only illogical, but useless.

Emmerich analyzes disposable income and economic benefits among several key income classes and comes to the stunning (and verifiable) conclusion that "a one-parent family of three making $14,500 a year (minimum wage) has more disposable income than a family making $60,000 a year." And that excludes benefits from Supplemental Security Income disability checks.

Actually, DAT, she **is** correct that FOOD STAMPS can't be used for beer or cigarettes.

But EBT public assistance can, and often is.
