I am moving in about 3 weeks to a 'new to us' home. Finally, I'm getting the kids settled back where they can take buses to their schools and in a home again(we are in a condo now). All this following my seperation a couple years ago--but I digress....

The house is different in the layout from many here. Instead of the basement entrance being under the stairs(pretty standard here in this part of the country), it is by the garage so I have an under stairs storage closet again right by the kitchen. Since this kitchen is small(one of our compromises to get back in a stand alone home), I plan to make this into my pantry. Any ideas you all can throw my way, I would love to read and see. I've looked around a bit online and like some things I've seen:

That was Harry Potter's bedroom for 10 years...

That would look great and convenient, especially as you said you are limited on space.

The oldest is getting an equivalent space :lmao: Fortunately, she has no magical powers except to pout and give dirty looks.

JK, she gets a teen retreat lower level style.  :lmao:

I like the idea but have to get used to it. I have either had a big pantry closet or this condo actually had what was probably supposed to be laundry area that never happened upstairs and I converted that room into a  huge pantry. I'm going to miss that since it was handy at the holidays when it was crammed full of extras:-( But I'll make do and look forward to getting creative with it. Like any other understair storage it is a generous space all in its own so if planned right, it should be quite useful and it's definitely convenient to the kitchen.

And for trading off some kitchen space, we got a bigger yard then the one we lost in our former home that's fenced with beautiful trees whose leaves I can rake in the fall.  :yahoo: I admit it..I'm a yard work geek. I love it and we are all looking forward to having the trampoline in the backyard again and fenced space for the dog to chase all sorts of small animals that invade her territory.  :-) The yards not shabby here..it's a large shared piece of land and more rural, but we really miss having our own space and a deck. And we get all that back, with actually more square footage overall in the house too and no connecting walls(so thankful for that with an autistic son who can have fits at times).

That's great.  I love it. :lmao:

My mom's prevoius house had slide-out shelves that looked like narrow, upright drawers.  Pull on the handle and a shelf slid out from the wall.  Very convenient.

I've got them in one pantry. The shelves not only slide out but pivet 90 degrees.

Hardboard works well as shelves (at least 5/8" thick). Just cut 'em to size, prime and paint.

If you use the vertical supports, gotta make sure to hit the studs when fastening them. Drywall anchors just don't work, especially when you start piling canned goods on those shelves.

Don't forget to utilize the space behind your door!  This gizmo has been a lifesaver everywhere I have lived.

I bought much cheaper behind the door organizers (I have one on each door of my pantry and one on the wall behind the door in my laundry room) at Walmart. You can move the baskets too.

Jty, my sister-in-law took a hallway closet and made it into a pantry. It works well for her.

I bought mine nearly 10 years ago, and couldn't find anything cheaper at the time.  This one you can buy different basket sizes, and move them whichever way you want.  Trust, if I found one cheaper, I would have bought it!  I like that this one hooks on the bottom and top of the door, so it is pretty stable.  It's a good thing I like it so much, because I am not getting rid of it anytime soon.  :-)

Load the back shelves with the least used items.

My SIL has her pantry in the guest bathroom.  It's a huge walkin.   I really  hate it when I am in there and she come through to get a can of corn.
