the Biggest problem our country faces is...

The Smart Grid

The biggest problem that society faces today isn’t obesity, the unemployment rate, healthcare, or the wars in the Middle East. It’s a problem that most Americans either don’t know about or know little but not enough to give it a second thought. But what if it would shut down for a month our country would cease to exist. The problem I speak of is our aging Electrical grid System. Our way of life revolves around electricity imagine going a couple hours or maybe even a couple days without it. “Electrical power is a little bit like the air you breathe: You don't really think about it until it is missing. Power is just "there," meeting your every need, constantly” (Brain). Most people today take electricity for granted and a lot of other things in life as well for granted until one day all of a sudden it’s gone. The U.S.-Canada Power System Outage Task Force which was created by a joint US-Canadian initiative to investigate the Black out of 2003. “The outage affected an area with an estimated fifty million people and 61,800 megawatts (MW) of electric load in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey and the Canadian province of Ontario. The blackout began a few minutes after 4:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time (16:00 EDT) and power was not restored for four days in some parts of the United States.” And after power was restored damages were estimated from four billion to ten billion dollars. A smart grid is a digitally enabled electrical grid that gathers, distributes, and acts on information about the behavior of all participants (suppliers and consumers) in order to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of electricity services.  The smart grid will better handle the supply and demand of the power grid.  Right now the electrical utility companies run power plants as back up to surges in demand and these back up plants waste twenty percent of all electricity produced.  The current power grid system is primarily analog which mean it can only move in one direction and the farther the electricity travels the more of it goes to waste.  If a smart grid was implemented electricity could travel further due to it being digital and computers could calculate the most efficient way to meet the consumer.  And can self-heal itself and find were there might be a downed power line and instantly know the location (Carnegie Mellon University 2009).

Hi Cholley, We're missing you on the other thread.  You had lots of very good responses.  Actually I find my obesity to be the biggest problem I face.

(This is a new paragraph.) Could you please explain the differences between analog and digital electrical transmission.

In analog technology, a wave is recorded or used in its original form. So, for example, in an analog tape recorder, a signal is taken straight from the microphone and laid onto tape. The wave from the microphone is an analog wave, and therefore the wave on the tape is analog as well. That wave on the tape can be read, amplified and sent to a speaker to produce the sound.
In digital technology, the analog wave is sampled at some interval, and then turned into numbers that are stored in the digital device. On a CD, the sampling rate is 44,000 samples per second. So on a CD, there are 44,000 numbers stored per second of music. To hear the music, the numbers are turned into a voltage wave that approximates the original wave.
The two big advantages of digital technology are:
The recording does not degrade over time. As long as the numbers can be read, you will always get exactly the same wave.
Groups of numbers can often be compressed by finding patterns in them. It is also easy to use special computers called digital signal processors (DSPs) to process and modify streams of numbers (see How CDs Work for a more detailed explanation).

So we could go to the store and buy CD's of electricity.  This is fantastic!!!!  How long could I run my house (say 2800sf) on a CD of electricity?

"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

The OP is kind of correct, though, is he/she not? Electricity is a very vital aspect of our every day life. The idea that this could disappear one day is kind of scary.

Then what?

It seems that it'd lead to some version of intense anarchy overnight. It also seems that this should be something that is seriously considered by all individuals of this country; especially with so much war taking place, and the idea that a world war could be right around the corner.

I can understand why it isn't, though. What can we realistically even do to prepare for such an event, and why even seriously consider such an event taking place?

Just an observation.

Allow people to build power plants?

Allow people to produce resources?

Animus means courage, and Vis Veres mean strength. It is Latin.

You just failed Latin 101 with a grade of 33%, Spanky. Go look it up.

What definition did you come across?

It can mean more than what I've offered, but it does mean the definition that I've given.
