As far as I've ever seen, the discs, themselves are held on by the lug nuts with a couple of locking type washers. The discs on most of my vehicles also house the wheel bearing assy., so there's that big nut, too.
Front wheel drives are a little different. I'm a little surprised that there were no locking washers (2 ea) on the disk rotor, though.
The wheel bearing nut didn't need removed, just a couple of taps with a rubber hammer on the backside of the disc and it popped off. That was after removing the caliper and the bracket.
