It took me 10 years and about 50 tries to quit. I was using all the stop aids, but ended up paying for it than I was the cigarettes. I ended up quittng cold turkey. The way I did was keep telling myself that if I can go this long without a smoke, I can go this much longer, ie; My first goal was for a week. I kept telling myself that if I can a week, I can two weeks. I then kept telling myself that if I can a two weeks, I can go a month. The major one was when I kept telling myself that if I can go a month, I can stop all together. This was five years ago, I haven't had one since.

The ultimate test came when I was drinking a beer. I am sure we all know drinking a beer and having a smoke go hand in hand. When I drank a beer and didn't have a desire to smoke, I knew I was officially a quitter.

I since quit drinking also. And have no desire to drink or smoke.

I was spending 80.00 a week on my habit. With the cost of them now, I am surprised anyone can afford to smoke.

Tell the doctor, "I'd totally kick your ass if I wouldn't get so winded."
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

I don't smoke....I just filter every breath of polluted air through a heat enhanced filtering device filled with tobacco, wrapped in thin white paper that requires a flame ignition source to get it started.

Good luck and more power to you. I would send you pictures of healing white hands but mine are nicotine stained.

I quit 33 years ago after having smoked for 10 years, so in my case, I probably wasn't as addicted as some. Furthermore, the tobacco companies like Brown & Williamson have been found adding addiction enhancers like ammonia that keep folks puffing away -- until their lips fall off or the fake larynx is implanted. Gotta love that!

All too often I hear folks who "want to want to quit." And they don't. Repeated failure after failure, it's a hallmark of those who simply don't make the decision to quit.

It boils down to making that decision. Period. If you don't make that decision, you don't quit.

I hope for your sake that you DO make that decision to quit. And follow whatever methodology that works for you. For me, I switched to a pipe (without inhaling) and when that got to be a pain in the ass because of the cleaning, tamping, relighting, packing, etc., I just threw the damn thing away and never looked back.

But fundamentally, it's the decision to quit that has to be made up front.

Undoubtedly franksolich will weigh in as I believe he might be the most recent CC-er to have quit.

kyle Ricky has sound advice set attainable goals. I also would recommend changing up your routine a little bit. it's amazing when you think about the little things one does that's a trigger for grabbing a smoke, lots of time without even thinking about it. don't make major changes just little things.

Good luck

I quit two times in my life and both were due to wellbutrin SR.  I take it for a week while smoking and then on a Monday I go cold turkey.  It's hell for the first 2-3 days and then it wavers off.  I still get cravings for them but when I smell smoke on someone I  :panic:   It really stinks on people to be honest.

oh and I started when I was 15, quit when I was 26 due to pregnancy and started back in 2002 and quit again in 2007.  Haven't went back.

I did start up for a couple weeks about a yr ago while under going cancer treatments. Yea strange and stupid i know  but what the hey.

MY FIL did this when he was given the terminal brain tumor talk from his dr.  He was told he had 3 months to live and he went out and got a pack of cigs, tried it for a week but he didn't really want them and stopped again.  :bawl:  It wasn't stupid in his case, he had nothing to lose but he just didn't like it anymore.

My father was in a nursing home. He had alzheimers. When I would go to see him, he would ask to go outside. It was the only times he could get outside. Even though he had quit years ago, he would ask for a cigarette and I would give him one. A few puffs and he was done. My little sister would raise hell but in his condition, whatever he wanted I would have given it to him.

Yeah, I do believe there are times when a person should just do what they enjoy and to hell with the consequences -- later in life, obviously, or when the prognosis is not good.

My Grandfathers Dr. once told him that "Dippin' that Copenhagen would kill him someday". My grandfather was 95 or so at the time.

Went for my yearly doctors appointment today and he told me I need to quit smoking I know it's time but damn do I love them any tips if you have quit.

I saw my mother and mother-in-law die slow, horrible deaths because of smoking.  I quit smoking in 1997 but kept using smokeless tobacco for almost 10 years after. Not sure how familiar you are with smokeless tobacco, but it is especially evil because you can chew practically anywhere without offending anyone.  I was so bad I'd sleep with a pinch.

Because of a scratchy throat that would not go away I went to the doctor practically trembling in fear that I had throat cancer.  Thanks to him, I am nicotine-free for what will be 6 years this September.  He told me to start using the patch and put me on a low-dose prescription of Wellbutrin to take the edge off of the nicotine fits.  It wasn't easy, but it was easier than any time I'd tried in the past.

Now I'm hooked on sunflower seeds.  :lmao:

Good luck to you!

Go to the sporting goods store, and get a mouthpiece you can form to your teeth. Only take it out to eat, and brush your teeth, maybe to sleep. It will have a conscious, and subconscious effect.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

A7X, some here have found success in using the e-cigs.  Here is our thread on it.  CC Link

I have been able to cut the smoking in half, and many people out there have moved 100% to vapor.  I'm a big fan.  It gives me the things I like about smoking (doing something with your hands, sucking in/blowing out something with flavor, the taste together with coffee or adult bev, etc.)  and also provides the nicotine, which you can taper off that dose as you see fit.
