What to grow?
« on: March 06, 2012, 12:36:52 PM »
Dad is giving me a 4x12 foot plot in his backyard garden to grow what I want.  What should I do in that little space that I can eat yet won't produce alot of vines/plant material?

I would grow the stuff you normally buy when you go shopping.  If it were me, I would be growing basil, onions, garlic, peppers, and red potatoes.  And strawberries.

Out of all of that list I would eat bell peppers

Yup.  Grow what you would eat.

I planted lettuce, corn, okra, peppers, (bells, jalapenos, habaneros, black pearls, Thai Chili, cayenne), squash, (yellow, zucchini, 8-ball), green beans, cucumbers, dill, cilantro, basil, and tomatoes.

There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Oh yes and carrots! The other veg that is nothing like the sticks in a plastic bag you buy at the store.

4 X 12?  Seriously?  About all you're gonna get is a few tomato plants (or in your case, a few bell pepper plants.)

Scoobs and I dug up a 12 X 20 foot patch last year and I want to do more, but trying to figure out which way to go is going to be interesting.

I do my herbs in a couple of planters I leave on the railing of the back porch (basil, cilantro, parsley, chives, oregano, and tarragon or dill.)

As far as the garden itself goes this year, it's for sure gonna be corn, green beans, carrots (if the damn squirrels don't eat them), squash, at least 2-3 types of tomatoes, pumpkin, and cantalopes.  No way we're going to do quite as many zuchinni, and not doing radishes at all.

That's on top of the regular stuff like apples, cherries, blueberries, raspberries (probably have to replace those bushes this year), strawberries, and peaches.  Hmmmm...plum trees, anyone?

Well, Gina, figure out which vegetables you eat and start from there.  (Notice I didn't say what you eat. )

As for 'toys,' I'm kinda into toys by Mossberg, Remington, Winchester, DPMS; all the firearms manufacturers.

Well ALL I eat is salad for realz.  I eat shitloads of eggwhites and meat.  I am an Atkins lifer.  I would eat Bell peppers and possibly cucumbers.  How are peppercini's made? are they banana peppers?  I could buy me a big jar of them, eat them and then just throw new banana peppers in there to soak.

Well, because of our heat, and water restrictions, I do have an "inside garden."  I have it in my sunroom, and the windows are open.    :-)

4'X12' ain't much space...so do like the indians did. Make some hills and plant some corn. When it comes up, plant climbing beans beside the corn. A couple of weeks later plant squash plants (or plant seeds at the time as beans) in the same hill as the corn. The corn needs nitrogen and the beans will furnish that. The squash will shade the ground and save soil moisture while shading out undesireable weeds and grass.

Then get hold of some 5 gallon plastic buckets and google up how to grow tomatoes out the bottom of hanging buckets. These you can put anywhere they will get a few hours of sun each day.

I love you but that is WAY too much work. :p

I'll do some bell peppers and cherry tomatoes I thinks.  Wonder how hard it is to do red sweet onion?
