Lost a chicken last night
« on: February 29, 2012, 02:24:40 PM »
A baby chick, actually. In all honesty they're very appealing creatures--cute, fuzzy, with a soothing peeping--so the loss upset the bunlets.

My middlin' child was upset and said it was unfair that something should die so young.

I told him there is no good day and no good way to die. To die young is to be cheated, to die old is to lose what has been a good run. To die healthy is to be cut short in prime. To waste is to linger in torment.

What matters are not the days we've lost, but to count the days we have.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

What an eggceptional story.

Farms are good for teaching the facts of life.

I still remember the horror of a litter of puppies my dog had and something happening to their eyes where they bulged out and dried up.  My brother shot them all.  I still hate him a little for that.

Yes they are.  Never name your food. That was my lesson.   :-)

That's why I name my pets after food I hate. Come here Brussels Sprouts.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?
I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.
And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.
I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.
That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.

Ecclesiastes 3: 1 - 15
It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

Actually we name our chickens.

Marsala
Honey mustard
Lemon pepper
Peppercorn
Kiev
Francaise
Popcorn

No joke.

Next year we'll invest in a flock of meat birds but those won't be named.

If you name one of them 'Fingers,' you should be sure to put a padlock on the door to the pen.

My buddy has a cow named T-bone.  And pigs named ham and bacon.  They are food.  Just not fully grown.

Yup, Gina is an example to this fact.
