11-25, 11-26 college football live thread
« on: November 25, 2011, 03:41:21 AM »
Texas 27, Texas A & M 25, final, played on Thursday.

Only one game today, Friday.

Iowa at Nebraska, 11:00 a.m. central time, 10:00 a.m. mountain time.

Iowa's got a pretty good team; anything can happen.

Then on Saturday, we got:

Ohio State at Michigan, 11:00 a.m. central time
Michigan State at Northwestern, 11:00 a.m.
Purdue at Indiana, 2:30 p.m.
Illinois at Minnesota, 2:30 p.m.
Penn State at Wisconsin, 2:30 p.m.

Iowa State at Oklahoma, 11:00 a.m.
Missouri at Kansas, 2:30 p.m.
Texas Tech at Baylor, 6:00 p.m.

Clemson at South Carolina, 6:45 p.m.

The lastmentioned, Clemson-South Carolina, is the big game of the week; the primitives on Skins's island have picked South Carolina, the favorite, but franksolich, who bases his own predictions upon intangibles, which the primitives utterly ignore, says it's going to be Clemson over South Carolina.

You heard it here first.

You know, I dunno why we're playing Iowa today.

Iowa may beat Nebraska today--after all, it's our first year in the Big 10, and we don't know our way around yet--but if they do, it'll probably be the last time in a very long time.  Iowa's 12-26-3 against Nebraska.

This, from a post I made some weeks ago:

Quote
While gazing at a football schedule hanging on the wall of a store yesterday, I noticed that Nebraska plays Iowa as the last game of the regular college football season, on Friday, November 25.

Yeah, yeah, I already knew this, but never thought about it until seeing that schedule.

There's something about this that concerns me very much.

The final games of a regular season usually--not always, but usually--involve a rivalry.

And I'd feel much more comfortable playing someone else in the Big 10 as that last game.

Doesn't Iowa have any rivalries, rather than hoping to have Nebraska as a rival?

I don't like it.

After which this, from wikipedia:

Quote
The Hawkeyes play three annual rivalry trophy games. Iowa's oldest rivalry trophy is Floyd of Rosedale, which has been awarded to the winner of the Iowa-Minnesota game every season since 1935.

Iowa plays Iowa State for the Cy-Hawk Trophy, which was created when the Iowa-Iowa State series resumed in 1977.

Iowa has played Wisconsin for the Heartland Trophy since 2004. Starting in 2011, the Hawkeyes and Badgers will no longer compete every year since they are in opposite divisions.

Although many erroneously say Iowa's new rival is the Nebraska Cornhuskers, most self-respecting Iowa fans would acknowledge that Iowa must first win a couple, three or four national titles before they can even start calling Nebraska a "rival."

These two teams will compete in the Heroes game which is the final regular-season game each season on the Friday after Thanksgiving, yet most knowledgable college football fans would inform readers that Nebraska now stoops to Iowa's level, having for decades played Oklahoma the day after Thanksgiving, the way College Football Was Meant To Be.

And finally, my comments:

Quote
I can see exactly what happened, when the eastern establishment elites were trying to straighten out things in the new Big 10--the ivy-covered ivory towers looked at a map and immediately thought, "Oh, Iowa and Nebraska are right next door to each other, and so they're natural rivals."

Uh, no.

There are no similarities, no similarities at all, between Nebraska and Iowa.

We're talking penguins and oranges here, two different things.

Iowa is more than a generation older than Nebraska, having been settled, and congested with people, villages, towns, and cities from the Mississippi to the Missouri before civilization advanced even six inches west of the Missouri River into Nebraska.

Iowa's, uh, considerably bigger than Nebraska.

And the people--well, Iowa was the origin of all those corny old "hayseed" and "hick farmer" and "country rube" jokes of yore, whereas Nebraska's had different, more flattering, sorts of stereotypes associated with it.

And to be bluntly honest, even if hurtful (but the truth sometimes hurts), Nebraskans still even today consider people from Iowa hicks, hayseeds, dumb farmers, country rubes.  It's a hurtful stereotype yes, but at the same time it's an accurate stereotype.

To be kind, Iowa is not in Nebraska's class.

The Big 10 is an ancient conference; surely Iowa's got more suitable rivals elsewhere in it, than us.

From the Omaha World-Herald November 27, 1891; today's the 120th anniversary of the first Nebraska-Iowa game.

Quote
Between 2,000 and 2,500 lovers of athletic sport took advantage of the opportunity of witnessing the foot ball game between the State University of Iowa and the State University of Nebraska.

Much credit is due the Omaha Athletic club for getting the game played in Omaha, but much censure and criticism should be heaped upon someone or ones for the condition and management of the grounds. The game was delayed three-quarters of an hour and all the spectators kept waiting because the goal posts had not been put up and no umpire was on hand.

When I was consulted I suggested Mr. Charles Wilson, captain of the Omaha Athletic club, as being thoroughly capable for the position, and after some trouble he was found and umpired the game to the great satisfaction of everyone. There was not a policeman on the ground, when at least fifteen or twenty were needed to keep the crowd back, and no ropes around the field. The crowd interfered greatly with the players and obstructed the view of those in carriages and tally-hos.

A very large six-horse tally-ho was decorated with the colors of the Omaha Athletic club and carried about twenty-five members. Another large tally-ho carried twenty Nebraska State University boys, who cheered their team to everything but victory.

After which a description of the game, which Iowa won, 22-0.  And then the audience:

Quote
A handsome turnout, with coachman and footman in livery, was occupied by Messrs. John Patrick and Luther Drake, Miss Skinner, Miss Emily Wakeley, Miss Doane, Miss Fritza Barnard and Miss McKenna. Chrysanthemums of yellow for the Lincoln boys and navy blue for Yale, which reminded Mr. Patrick of when he rushed with the pigskin there, were the colors of this turnout.

Mr. Curtis Turner, another Yale graduate, sported the blue in one of the handsomest turnouts there, and by his side were Cousin Dan Morgan, Miss Parker and Miss Laura Hoagland.

Mr. Robert W. Patrick, a Yale graduate, and manager of the Omaha Athletic Foot Ball team, and Mr. Howard H. Baldridge, assistant United States attorney, were seated in a fine carriage explaining the nice points of the game to Miss Nelsie Hughes and Miss Yost.

Mr. Will Poppleton, an '87 Harvard man, sported the crimson and in his carriage were Mrs. Will Poppleton, Miss Poppleton, Miss Mary Poppleton, Miss Brown, Miss Chandler.

Mr. Wing Allen and Mr. George Mercer, a '90 Yale man, drove a fine pair of bays decorated with blue.

Messrs. Chat and Clark Redick, Mrs. Himebaugh and Miss Himebaugh had their carriage elaborately bedecked with light blue and pink, the colors of ... Athletic club.

Uncle Dick ... nice points satisfactorily in his carriage to Mrs. Riali and Miss Mabel Orchard.

Another party I noticed was Mr. Tom Eyek, Mr. Tim Huteson, Miss Tracy and Miss Hodgson.

Bert Cook was telling Will Doane and Arthur Gulon how the game should and should not be played while Mr. Charles Gulon looked on.

General Cowin and his partner, Mr. William D. McHugh, were discussing the merits of the game as they would some knotty points of law, while close beside them Judge Frank Irvine said that he had rather be out in the fray than "in it."

C.S. Montgomery, John H. Blair and Charles Goss, Henry M. Morrow, John L. Woolson, D.L. Cartan and other lawyers stood by, glad that court didn't keep on Thanksgiving day.

Dr. Wilcox forgot in the excitement that there ever was a coroner in Omaha, while lion. M.V. Gannon seemed this time to be in it, and Frank E. Moores was singing gently about "the hole in the rush line'' and not "in the sea."

Max Meyer was driving his bays around the park with a party of gentlemen.

Mr. George of Potter & George thought he was a boy again.

Mr. and Mrs. Colpetzer witnessed the game from their carriage.

Mr. H.H. Meday, Henry Wyman, Miss Hoagland and Frank Hamilton were present.

Mr. George Ames was telling Will Wells about his Thanksgiving birthday at intervals of the game, and was thinking what a hit the Athletic club made in getting this game here.

Mr. "Billy" Paxton was expatiating on the "warding off'' and talking to his fair escort, Colonel Sharp.

Fort Omaha had to be represented. For that purpose Captain Dempsey, Lieutenants Webster, Wright, Whitman and Mallory were present.

Mrs. Mercer and Mrs. Hultz occupied a carriage.

Mr. Arthur Wakeley, when an Iowa half back ran forty yards and scored a touchdown, forgot all about politics and speeches, and couldn't have told on the spur of the minute who was mayor-elect.

Will Wakeley and Bird Wakeley thought out doors was better than stitled court room and cheered the Lincoln boys.

Dean Gardner and a party of ladies were enjoying the game from a carriage.

Mr. H.T. Clarke, James Washburn of the Patrick Land company; Miss Lowe, Miss Poplin, Miss Jennie McClelland and Miss Clark were seen among the many admirers of the game.

Mr. Carl Baldach, Mr. Fred Smith, Mr. Battin, with Green & Baxter, Dr. Hartsuff, Dr. Gilmore, Dr. Anglin, Dr. McDonald, Mr. McCloud, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hull and Mr. Charles Saunders were among the many spectators.

The Iowa delegation and team stopped with Mr. Reed at the Dellone, while Mr. Silloway of the Murray entertained the Nebraska team and their friends from Lincoln. Among the latter were: Mr. John W. Dixon, nephew of Hon. John C. Watson; W.E. Brooks, James B. McDonald, Burnwell Colson, George P. Beardsley, C.C. Marlay, M.M. Sears, E.O. Jones, R.H. Thompson, M.M. Maghee, R.H. Johnstone, Thomas Cochran, Ralph E. Johnstone.

It's not nice for a pig coach to utter the words " You M Fer " on national tv to a Tiger coach that ate your carcass.

Just sayin'.

You know, the guy sitting in the cubicle watching the game on television and punching in the numbers as they happen--or what he's supposed to be doing--must've toked some dope or something.

I'm sure it's Ohio State-Michigan that's now underway, not Michigan State-Northwestern.

The first starts at 11:00 a.m., the other at 2:30 p.m.
