Has anyone ever painted a brass bed?
« on: October 26, 2011, 02:01:07 PM »
My mom has a brass bed that I want to paint. I want to either paint it to look like oil rubbed bronze or a rustic look, maybe black with a little rust.

I used a product when I rusted a can to make a pencil holder and it turned out really well. First you paint this lead like paint on it so it looks all rough and it's matte. Then you paint on the rusting solution.  After you can spray a protective coating on top. You can use as little or as much as you want so I could have more of the black showing than the rust.

I'm trying to talk her into painting it, she has absolutely no imagination...at all.  It looks very 80-90's to me and by painting one of the ways I said above or making it look like aged brass I think it would make it look really cool. She just wants to get rid of the bed, I say she before she gets rid of it we should try to make it look as cool as possible. This bed is in her guest room where my girls are staying so they will be out of that room soon after we move.

Why not just melt it down to make ammo casings?

I've never attempted to paint brass.  The technique you mentioned sounds interesting.

I'm no expert, but I would think the brass would need a good steel-wool treatment first, then at least a couple coats of a good spray primer. Then a couple coats of a nice spray acrylic.

If you don't steel-wool the brass, the primer may not stick. Just a guess on my part, but it's not like I haven't handled a lot of brass over the years.  :-)

And no smart-ass comments from any of you cretins about me handling brass!  :lmao:

Was that a four poster and did you polish it first?

My mother-in-law did.  She used metal primer before painting.  She did not rough up the surface because, as she put it, "I've lived long enough to know styles will change and somebody will want the brass to show again."  She's right.  Last I knew a couple of her daughters' had them and refinished to the original.

She did one in a high gloss cream color and the other in a matte pink (for a granddaughter).
