Warning: Kitchenaid toasters
« on: June 14, 2011, 05:46:59 PM »
I bought a new KitchenAid 4-slice toaster about six months ago for about $200, it was one of the top on the line models. So far I've had nothing but issues with it and today it's fate was sealed.

The first thing to go wrong was the right side in which you had to fight to get the toast to stay down.
The second thing was the dial on the right side which now can be turned forever, so I'm lead to believe it's poor quality.
Another complaint is the cord is far to short to be useful, and just is not a very attractive toaster.

And today it failed to pop the toast, and caught fire causing some minor damage in my kitchen which, had I not been near could have been much worse. As it is I have to repaint one of the shelves, and fix a small part of the wall that got burnt.

I have no clue why it failed to pop as I took it apart and everything appears to be in working order however I can verify it was not a short or bad component. I can only think that the mechanism which pops the toast jammed.

So if you own an older KitchenAid toaster, be warned. I'm called them and told them, and they were less then helpful. I'm going to check recalls tomorrow in case.

I'll post some pictures later.

Almost all toaster have short cords, it makes it harder to throw them into bathtubs.

I have no idea what kind of toaster we have, it's so old that I can't tell.  My kids complain because it's hard to push the lever down, but it has never failed to toast, toasted only one side, failed to pop, or started a fire.  I sincerely hope we never have to replace it, and the OP is why.  New toasters suck...

$200 for a toaster?

Unreal.

Yep and the funny thing is, none of the $15 toasters I've used have ever caused any issues like this.

When I got married, back in 88, we received 4 toasters.  I never got rid of them, kept them all.  They probably cost maybe $10 back then.  I am on my first, and still have three in boxes.  I don't anticipate ever having to buy a toaster in my life.   :-)

packrat!!

Kitchen Aid quality has really gone downhill over the years. I have a Kitchen Aid Mixer that's older than I am. It still works just fine. (It was my mom's)
