When my Dad got sick we struggled and basically we loaded up for the month on cheap chicken legs, pasta, sauce and cereal and that was it, a few dollars were kept aside for milk and bread. Was it fun? no, but you did what you had to do and didn't rely on the Government.
When I was growing up we were pretty darn poor. Dad was a low ranking AF sergeant (E5). He kept pissing his superiors off and getting demoted for fighting.
Busted 3 times. He had quite a temper, but I like to think it was that belligerence that got him through a year of 'Nam, including the fire fighs. Anyway, we were poor and qualified for food stamps and the free school lunch program...we didn't take any of that and I can still remember wishing I was sitting down to a nice hot lunch instead of a pb&j, apple and cookie, or whatever Mom had packed. When Dad retired he struggled with shitty paying jobs for years and we actually went hungry to bed for awhile. Still, no accepting food stamps. Thank God I got scholarships for college, and by then Mom was working after being a housewife for years, so as I was getting myself an education they were getting on their feet.
I don't knock anyone for food stamps, and I can see using them at PETCO for pet food. Our furbabies gotta eat too! But, the rest of that shit. **** 'em, they need to be cut off from taxpayer money if that's how they're gonna spend it.
