Is there a Mac guru in the house? I got a hardware problem.

I have a G4 tower and I am having USB problems.

I just got a new iPod and for some reason it will only intermittently recognize the iPod.

I am getting the feeling my ports are not USB 2.0, so I ordered a Allegro PCI USB 2.0 card.

I just want my iPod to work.

I have tried everything else to get the iPod to work and nothing helps.

Does this sound like the solution to the problem, to upgrade the USB ports?

Sounds like a mechanical problem with a cable or a socket.

I'd first try a new cable.

Then I'd try a different USB port. Maybe the on on the keyboard instead of the one on the machine.

A USB 2.0 card will likely help if the issue is the socket, and WILL be faster.

A final possibility is that the socket on the ipod needs repair. If that's the case, I know a place that does component level repair and charges a reasonable price.

Cables are good, tried them at work. No problems talking to the ipod.

The keyboard USB is lower power than the ports I have on the G4, so that's not gonna help.

I already had the ipod looked at, and it is fine. It's getting a charge from my Mac but it's not getting enough juice to synch.

Apple doesn't really tell you if you have an older Mac, like I do, that is a work horse... that it won't work with an iPod. I am pretty sure I solved my issue. I just hope I can figure out how to install this new PCI card on the mac without too many problems.

Apple towers are SIMPLE to work with.

You can google up visual instructions for putting in a PCI card, too.

ATTN: DUmmie_UnKyndCulture:
I don't know ANYTHING about MAC's yet a simple Google search revealed a page dealing with those very same problems:
http://xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/ipod_transfer_problems.html

Hope that helps.
