Volkswagen to hold talks with NASCAR
« on: November 20, 2010, 06:18:20 AM »
This might be heresy to some of us who follow NASCAR, but I think it's a good thing.  Right now, one of the three drivers that could win the Sprint Cup championship (the last race of the season is tomorrow in Homestead FL) drives a Toyota--engined car.

HOMESTEAD, Fla.

A NASCAR official confirmed the sanctioning body has a meeting scheduled with Volkswagen in January.

While Volkswagen competition representative Hans-Joachim Stuck emphatically denied any interest in American stock cars at Homestead one year ago, in a recent interview with Financial Times Deutschland the former racer discussed possibly taking the brand to Formula One and NASCAR. Reports earlier this month confirmed VW wouldn't pursue F1 after all.

Although Stuck said last year that VW needs to be in a series where the company can "display our German technology, and (NASCAR) is a marketing (platform)," perhaps the automaker's changed its tune? Or its interest in NASCAR's sports car series, Grand-Am, could be picking up again.

The rest of the piece is only three more paragraphs.  Yes, they're building a plant in TN.  Let's see . . . a Ford Fusion, a Chevy Monte Carlo, a Dodge Charger, a Toyota Camry, . . . and Herbie?

(ETA:  It'd probably be a Passat or Jetta.)

My money is on the Nash Metropolitan.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948
