Apollo lunar landing sites photographed
« on: September 22, 2010, 11:47:22 PM »
I am a huge fan of the Apollo project and was fascinated by this recent article that shows the Apollo landing sites photographed by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

What is particularly interesting is the photo of the Apollo 14 landing site in which you can see the Astronaut's footpath from the LEM to the Cone Crater.  This is probably most visible at this landing site because of the rickshaw type of cart the Astronauts used on this mission to haul equipment around.

On the Apollo 17 site, if you enlarge the picture you can see 2 shadows.  One of the descent stage of the LEM and the other is the lunar rover that was parked at a distance from the LEM so that they could use the onboard video camera to capture the ascent stage as it lifted off of the lunar surface.
