Brits Mulling the Decentralization of NHS
« on: July 24, 2010, 03:27:34 PM »
LONDON — Perhaps the only consistent thing about Britain’s socialized health care system is that it is in a perpetual state of flux, its structure constantly changing as governments search for the elusive formula that will deliver the best care for the cheapest price while costs and demand escalate.

Even as the new coalition government said it would make enormous cuts in the public sector, it initially promised to leave health care alone. But in one of its most surprising moves so far, it has done the opposite, proposing what would be the most radical reorganization of the National Health Service, as the system is called, since its inception in 1948.

Practical details of the plan are still sketchy. But its aim is clear: to shift control of England’s $160 billion annual health budget from a centralized bureaucracy to doctors at the local level. Under the plan, $100 billion to $125 billion a year would be meted out to general practitioners, who would use the money to buy services from hospitals and other health care providers.

This doesn't mean what you think it does. It's still going to be just as "socialised", except that it's going to leave more decisions up to the doctors themselves. It is trimming the fat, but don't make the mistake of assuming every "Leftist" wants as big a government as possible.

This could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how it plays out.

The NHS is not exactly a stellar system compared to the French or Nordic systems however. It should also be pointed out that you can opt for private insurance in the UK & Ireland. My mother does, it came in handy when dealing with her recent breast cancer however from other stories she's heard those without still got a fairly good level of treatment.

Being out of work for quite some time, she is going to have difficulty paying the insurance however, which could be awkward in future as she's getting old and more prone to other health issues.

One of the virtues of the US system is that they do deal with cancer very well and has better survival rates than here as our system is horribly mismanaged. I imagine under a more conservative/libertarian system, the "personal responsibility" card would be played(which is nonsensical as anyone can get cancer, even if a healthy lifestyle helps) which would be very worrying.

It shouldn't need to be pointed out that the cheaper a doctors visit is, the more lives you can save. I have a friend who was bleeding from the anus and wouldn't see a doctor because he didn't want to pay $50+ and have it end up be something minor. It's crazy.

First of all, it is obvious to the more intelligent Leftists that there has to be some producers for leftist looters to loot from.  The smarter lefties understand at least this much:  There Is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch If We Socialize The Entire Economy.

Second of all, the "personal responsibility" card doesn't mean a person doesn't get sick.  Where do you lefties come up with this crap?

You sound silly.  And yet you complain when you and your ilk are aptly characterized as "chew toys."  Well, have you ever taken the personal responsibility to be something other than a chew toy?

How the blue flying **** does "personal responsibility" have anything to do with tossing people in the street for getting cancer...unless maybe lung cancer from smoking or some shit.

Of course idiot lefties want legal drugs but rail against cigarettes because of smoking related illnesses.
