South Carolina state Rep. Nikki Haley was trying to avoid a runoff Tuesday after early vote totals in the race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination showed her in the lead but short of the 50 percent needed to win the spot on the ticket.

With 53 percent of precincts reporting, Haley had 48 percent of the vote, with Rep. Gresham Barrett polling second with 23 percent, in a close four-way race that was peppered with scandal. Those results hold, Haley and Barrett will face off in a June 22 runoff election.

Republican opponent Lt. Gov Andre Bauer had 17 percent of the vote so far, and Attorney General Henry McMaster received 12 percent.

State Sen. Vincent Sheheen, meanwhile, has won the Democratic nomination for South Carolina governor. Sheheen, a Camden lawyer, picked up a majority of the votes Tuesday to avoid a runoff.
