F'n Ziti (aka baked ziti)
« on: January 18, 2010, 10:22:02 AM »
Ziti is a tubular pasta, sized somewhere between penne and rigatoni.
If you really want to do it right, make your own sauce, and add Italian sausage, but this is a quick recipe that is bachelor friendly.

1/2 package (8 oz.) Ziti
1 jar Newman's Own Italian Sausage and Peppers sauce
2 cups grated Mozzarella cheese (some parmesean too if you like)
Parsley

Preheat oven 350 degrees
Boil ziti ten minutes and drain
In a large bowl, combine ziti, jar of sauce, and 1 cup cheese, mixing well.
Spread mixture into lightly greased 2 1/2 qt. baking dish.
Cover and bake 35 min or until hot and bubbly.
Uncover, top with remaining cup of cheese, and parsley.
Return to oven ten minutes until cheese melts.

This will serve more than it looks like.. at least four heavy servings, maybe more like 8. As with any reheated pasta, add a little water if you are going to reheat in the microwave.

I LOVE baked ziti...and I've been wanting to make it but keep doing other stuff instead.

Like you, I do jarred sauce. I use a tomato basil that I zing up a little.

I add a couple of cans of drained sliced mushrooms, 1 large diced onion and about 1 tablespoon of garlic sauteed in about 2 tablespoons of olive oil.

I either brown loose Italian sausage with the 'shroom mixture and drain or I will parboil Italian sausage links and cut them into chunks.

I mix up the sauce, meat and ziti and some ricotta. Put in the roasting pan, then cover with shredded mozzarella.

It's wonderfully easy, great for feeding a crowd .....and such good comfort food!!!

Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

"My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far I've finished two bags of M&M's and a chocolate cake. I feel better already." – Dave Barry

A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands.
