Stones for Ibarra by Harriet Derr

Sometime last year I started going to work with my brother. He wanted me to come with him on his night shift as security at the Heritage Village. While there I saw this book lying around, my attention kept going back to it as I got bored. So A couple days later I started reading the rather thin volume.

It sounded like it took place in the 50's. A man and his wife decide to shuck it all and move to Mexico, where his father had once run a mine, which he had inherited although it was abandoned. They ran out of road long before they got to the village.
The old house was still there, although in need of major repair. Obviously they stood out like sore thumbs in the poor village with their convertable and being white and all.

The man announced he would re-open the mine and had no problem finding willing and eager laborers. Actually they had been finding him before he ever said a word about reopening the mine.

It's not an action-packed book and they don't go native and bring them socialism or anything. It's just a sad story about a couple trying to make their life worth living while they can.
