Vin Scully said Tuesday he will continue in the broadcast booth for the Los Angeles Dodgers through the 2010 season, then decide whether he will walk away.

The Hall of Fame announcer told The Associated Press that he still loves the job he's had with the team since 1950, but that it's hard to be away from his wife during a long season.

Scully's longevity is remarkable, but even more remarkable is his unique style. It transcends just sportscasting. It is artistic broadcasting at its best. You don't have to be a sports fan to appreciate him.

You can read about his style in this fine Salon article

There are more articles about his style here and here.

Perhaps the best - and best known - example of the broadcasting artistry of Vin Scully is his call of the ninth inning of Sandy Koufax's perfect game on September 9, 1965. You can listen to it here and read the transcript of it here. Remember, this was a live unscripted description of an on-going event.

You can find a good biography of the man in this Wikipedia article.

Vin is the only reason I care about the Dodgers.
