Education law blocks way for stimulus funds

A state law pushed by the teachers union and hurriedly passed in a special session six years ago has left Nevada ineligible to compete for millions of dollars in stimulus funding for education -- money local educators say is sorely needed.

Because Nevada law prohibits student achievement data from being used in teacher evaluations, the state can't enter the Obama administration's Race to the Top, a $4.3 billion competition for states willing to take sweeping action to turn around failing schools.

That could mean as much as $200 million in one-time funding for Nevada

It sounds like the President & the teachers union was not on the same page.
