We must prevail, we can never allow ourselves to give up
« on: September 15, 2009, 11:42:07 PM »
Hi folks,

I am going to ask you all to tolerate a story from a very old marine.  It was the hot summer of 1958, I had been in boot camp in Parris Island, SC for 8 weeks or so, with many weeks left to go.  Little did I know that I was about to learn one of the most valuable lessons I would ever learn about life.

On Sunday afternoon each recruit platoon would have competition with all the other platoons on the island in what we called field day, which was a modified track meet, with things like wheel barrow races, running events, tug of war, distance events etc.  It was taken very seriously.

One of the biggest events was a tug of war.  Each side would take their biggest, strongest 15 marines and put them on one side of the rope.  In the center was a hankerchief and there was a huge mud bog.  You would pick up the rope, move it to the point the hankerchief was over the middle of the bog, the signal was given and the tug-o-war would begin.  It was the last event of the day and the winners would move up to the next level until the final winning platoon would prevail...so the last two might have found themselves tugging in 5 or more events, and it was not unusual for each event to take 15-20 minutes so a whole lot of energy was expended.

Well our head DI had duty that weekend and we had never, ever won even one tug of war event.  As usual we lost in the first round.  Our DI was furious, made us run back to the barracks, in 90+ degree heat.  We got inside and he had us close all the windows, no AC mind you, then we participated in one of his favorite drills called over and under.  What I want you to picture is 75 young men leaping over the top of one bunk, then sliding under the next bunk, up over the next bunk...you get the picture.  Guys landing on top of people, sweat pouring off our bodies, and we probably did that for at least 30 minutes straight with him in our face screaming at us all the time....we were exhausted.  He then had us stand at attention in front of our bunks and the lecture began.

His message was simple and clear.  The reason we never won a single tug of war was we were a bunch of losers....and he proceeded to tell us why we lost.  He said it was simple, just one of the 15 men tugging on the rope has to rest for just a second to catch his breath, then the hankerchief starts to move in the opposite direction.  That then energizes the opposition and they pull harder, adrenalin pumping, then another guys lets up for just a second, it moves again and pretty soon your asses are all in the mud.  His message was that no platoon was in better shape than we were, stronger than we were, but we were not mentally up to the task.  Each and every marine must commit to himself and his team mates that he would be damned if he would be the one who lets up for even a second, you will not be the one to let everyone else down.

Long and short of it was this.  From that point foreward we never, ever lost a tug of war.  I witnessed guys pulling on a rope for 15 minutes straight and the hankerchief not moving 2 inches in either direction, but sooner or later his words became gospel.  One guy on the other team would stop and rest for a split second and it would start moving.  Our guys knew the drill and the adrenalin set in and we were pulling folks all into the mud....worked every time.

As I became an adult in an adult world I found myself in my 30's in a terrible situation where I was failing regularly in my job.  My co-worker was supposedly my trainer and was negotiating to become a partner in the firm.  Little did I realize that if I succeeded it would hurt his negotiating position...so instead of helping me he was giving me bad advice trying to do everything he could do to get me to fail and quit.  Well the day came where the partnership agreement was signed.  He then called me into his office and laid out the truth, gave me a heartfelt apology and then said, "I have never met a guy like you before.  You just would never quit.  No matter how many times you got knocked down, you got back up and fought even harder."  It was meant as a compliment.  He then told me what I needed to get back on track and I became the #1 producer in the firm for over 25 years straight.

I then took them to court and won the lawsuit cause I knew I had more will power than they did and I won hands down.

Many times I have wished I could find my old DI to thank him for teaching me one of life greatest lessons....

Why did I tell that story?  Because right now all of us who are Americans are in the fight of our lives to save our republic.  No matter how hard we try.  No matter how many times we go to town hall meetings, write our congressmen, send letters to the editor, the other side is making fun of us, trying to humiliate us.  What did Axelrod say about the tea party.  "They don't represent mainstream America......and later the said, "They are wrong."  Today Harry Reid basically said he would use the nuclear option if he had to in order to jam the health care bill down our throats.  And following that is cap and trade.  I spent six hours researching cap and trade last night and it is a horror story beyond belief.  They are behaving like they believe they have more will power than we do and they are wrong, but they will continue to do as Van Jones screamed, push and push and push.

I'm a few months from 70, and a very tired old man.  BUT I TELL YOU THIS.  I WILL BE DAMNED IF I AM GOING TO GIVE UP OR LET UP.  I WILL NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES LET THE BASTARDS GET ME DOWN.

Ya with me???

Hi,

I am glad.  I am a few months short of 70 and come to the realization that I would rather die fighting for something I believe in than drooling in my Cheerios in a nursing home.

Its funny how you can be on this earth for 43 years and still read something that you haven't seen or heard put quite that way before.  Really made me think.  Thanks!

By the Way, my dad was a marine and at Pendleton about the same time you were at Parris Island.  He talks like you do.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. Hi folks,

We got inside and he had us close all the windows, no AC mind you, then we participated in one of his favorite drills called over and under.

Ah...the Indoor Olympics. My Drill Instructors favorite sports were "Watching TV" and "Hanging Ten".

"Watching TV" wasn't to bad. You sat on the deck with your hands behind your head and your feet off the deck. You stayed like that until stomach cramps and muscle spasms had half the platoon jumping about like Mexican jumping beans.

"Hanging Ten" was always relaxing. You had to hook your toes over the rail of the top rack and hang down, pushing out from the base with your hands so that you were on an angle. You hung like that until (in my case) everything turned green (couldn't see) and as your ears filled with blood you couldn't hear commands clearly or not at all. When you felt the deck shake a few times from people passing out and falling off their rack you knew it was just about over. The drill instructors would come by and knock your feet off the top rack at which point you were supposed to jump to attention....of course when you jumped to attention, you immediately passed out.....now if you were smart, you extended by fakery that passed out time on the floor for a couple of minutes so that when you jumped to attention the second time, you didn't immediately pass out again.

And let me assure you fellows that passed through Parris Island in the heat of one of the three hot seasons....it's just as damn miserable in the dead of winter..... :rotf:....no matter what, my position on the PT field was always on a mud puddle. And no matter how careful I was not to break the ice on it, one of my Drill Instructors was sure to come along and be nice enough to break the damn ice for me. .... :rotf:

Hi Johnny,

I was honestly blessed with the best damn DI on the island.  His name was SSgt Thomas R. Phebus.  I owe the man a great deal for the lessons he taught me.  Unlike some of the other DI's, for the most part our punishment was PT (Physical Training), squat jumps, pushups, situps, you name it.  Whenever he gave us punishment, he did them with us counting in typical drill instructor bellow as we did them.  He was an amazing man, I personally saw him do 50 pullups counting all the way.  The best guy in our platoon was Tommy Epp, a state champion wrestler in Illinois and he could do 18.  Pheobus was the top DI and his recruit platoons always finished in the top of the graduation class and as I got older I understood why.

Not only would he do the drill with us, he would require his assistant DI to do them as well.  Now we were at PI from 6/20/58 for whatever 16 weeks turned out to be.  We hit 120 on the rifle range and there was only one day in the entire experience when it was too hot todrill and the red flag went up.  Instead we stayed inside the damn quonset huts with no circulation whatsoever.

Funny some of the crazy stuff you remember.  We ran from the barracks out to the quonset huts for the rifle range.  They had heavy lined, quilted shooting jackes in a pile and we had like two mintues to find a jacket that fit.  They were all still wet and sweaty from the last platoon that wore them....as I would imagine they were when we took them off and left them in a pile when we were done at the range.

You have to understand our generation was much different.  We had two guys on our football team that topped 200# and we thought they were huge.  I graduated from high school on 6/10/58 and weighed 142#.....when I got out of boot camp I weighed 168# with probably less body fat than I had when I got to the island.

And finally, I do not know about your DI's but ours were absolute comedians.  I will never forget him screaming at me, about two inches from my nose, "Miller you are so damn dumb you could take your brain, maginfy it 1000 times, stick it up a fleas ass and it would rattle like a BB in a boxcar!"  "YES SIR!"  Try to do that and keep from laughing.....

Ah yes you brought back some memories....

You're a better man than I....I couldn't contain my laughter and my platoon paid dearly for that fact. It took about the first 2 weeks of boot camp for me to learn to control it. At least I wasn't alone, there was a Seminole Indian from south Florida in our platoon that enjoyed a good laugh too.

And about the weight thing. I was 6'4" and weighed 135 lbs, skin and bones, when I joined. I had to drink a lot of water and eat a couple of bananas to weigh 141 lbs (the minimum) to enlist. 5 days after arriving at Parris Island they gave us a bunch of shots, measured and weighed us....I weighed 130 lbs....I had lost 5 pounds. 31 days later they did it again....I weighed 161 pounds. I had gained a pound a day and it wasn't any of it fat.

"Chow time" was funny. I can hear the drill instructor now, "Skinny bodies to the front. Fat bodies to the rear. Fat bodies, meat, lettuce and water only. Hatch bodyyyyyyyyy...open the hatch".

Hi,

Thank SSgt Phebus.....all I did was mention what I learned from him.  This is too doggone important to give up, we out number them despite what the media trys to portray.  The hankerchief started moving in our direction last night, the trick is to pull harder now, not rest......  The public has finally figured out just what real liberals are all about....taking away the freedom many of us volunteered to risk our lives for.

When you think about it we survived the first year and we are moving in our direction, one more year to go...

Hang in there.....I just may start a thread about that.  Thanks for prompting me.

Thank you! My son is a Marine and I understand totally!
As for me-- I will never give up! This country is too important to have it given away to a bunch of loons. More and more people are waking up and I do believe that we have a chance. It will not be easy, but we can do it!
As an aside- I am sick that my son is serving under this administration. They do not see the Military as they should. Did you ever watch how Bam salutes as he gets off of the plane? Aweful site! patheteic!

Hi,

Yes BO has no clue how to salute.  You can see the absolute disgust the Marine Guards have for him also.  They do their job but the looks on their faces speak volumes.

Your son is a hero.  When guys like me were in it was a cake walk.  We were too young for Korea and had been discharged by the time Vietnam got going.

True words of wisdom sir! It works in all of lifes pursuits. I am a fisherman and love to watch bassmaster Mike Iaconelli, his motto "never give up" He has won many touraments in the last moment.
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

THANK YOU, 5412. For both your service, and the speech. I'm not going to steal your thunder, but I am visually impaired, and suffer extreme depression. I was moved by that speech, and will try with all my might to keep kickin'. No matter what happens.  :saluteusmc:

PS: Anyone who wishes to hear my story, just ask. I will try to condense it.

Revolution, I came across this excellent and inspiring thread today.  I'd like to hear your story!
Thanks to 5412 for sharing such wonderful advice for all of us.  And thanks for making me feel not quite so old this morning, sir.  I was resting in my Mama's womb while you were "playing" at PI.

My son came back from Marine boot camp talking about how much FUN he had.  And he did mention how everyone picked on him because he was barely 17.  The senior DI asked him if his parents knew he was there, well, yes Drill Sergeant, then they must not love you, to which my son said, guess not.  He said the other 17-year old that got razzed that way cried.  Hmm.  I told him to thank me for all the years he got to listen to me yelling at him. :lmao:

Thank you, and everyone else reading this who served/serves for your committment to this nation.  My deepest sympathies for those on active duty with Zer0 as CiC.
